HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ) Is a law that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information for patients.

A decision support system (DSS) is an information system that supports business or organizational decision-making activities. DSSs serve the management, operations and planning levels of an organization.

Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) are rules to protect the public from fraudulent or erroneous practices by corporations and other business entities. Used to increase transparency in financial reporting by having a system of checks and balances.

Gram-Leach-Biley Act (GLBA) It is a federal law that requires financial institutions to explain how they share and protect their customers’ private information.

I believe having compliance in anything is a good way to keep everyone honest. It is certainly a good way to have a form of checks and balances. This way the idea is try and prevent any corruption. For example, being complaint with SOX improves corporate governance and accountability. Part of the requirements is for corporations need to save all business records, including electronic records and electronic messages, for “not less than five years.” Consequences for noncompliance include fines or imprisonment, or both. Again this just shows that all parties are aware of what’s going on and a great way to keep all parties involved.
