Abstract

This research study the effect of being taught in mother tongue (L1) on the second language (L2) acquisition and applied a causal-vocabulary learning is inter-related to other language skills. vocabulary learning is inter-related to other language skills. Since the acquisition of vocabulary is so important in learning a second language, effective ways of teaching and learning vocabulary should be emphasized. In fact, many supported the use of L2 only so as to provide full exposure to that language. The purpose of the present study was to address the problem of low proficiency learners in a secondary government school in Dammam city. The research approves that confirmed that proper application of L1 can effectively assist the memorization of new words during L2 vocabulary

In this paper, the learning the second language that was determined by how the students performed in three tests: an oral communication, a syntax, and a vocabulary test. Clear differences were found between the two groups with respect to the proficiency in English, although they were not statistically significant.

Also, This research, which involved the experimental group. The data collected through a pre-test and a post-test.

Introduction

In many research on second language classroom, the role and influences of mother tongue on the learning of a second language has always been the subject of has always been the subject of debate a hotly intense. There are disagreements on whether or not to use the learners’ first language to teach a second language. Over the last several decades or so, the idea of using mother languages within an educational setting was not a popular one. Most institutions of educations prefer the sole use of a second language, arguing that it offers total exposure to that particular dialect. Use of a first language is perceived as depriving learners input in a second language. Despite the numerous arguments from those in favor of the use of mother tongue, linguistic experts are yet to offer a conclusion to the issue. They have failed to reach a consensus on whether the use of a first language boosts or undermines the acquisition of a second language.

Some experts are of the opinion that a second language should be utilized as much as possible when teaching a foreign language. While this language should be the main one used in learning and instruction, the mother language should not be abandoned because it plays a minor but significant role in the learning process. Others argue that the first language should be included in a foreign language classroom, especially when there are students who are not very proficient in the new dialect. However, not many research studies have been carried out to look into the effectiveness of using a mother tongue to help non-proficient students learn a new language. The use of L1 in the language classroom is deemed as depriving the learners' input in L2 (Ellis, 1984).

Literature Review

There are many previous studied the literature so as to become a better vision of, the role and influence of mother tongue on the learning of a second language. During the past 30 years, in the late seventies to early eighties, the idea of using mother tongue in language classroom was not a favored one. Majority of the language classroom used solely L2 while the use of L1 is avoided totally (Liu, 2008). Instruction in mother language enables learners to form concepts as they can comprehend knowledge in a familiar dialect.

According to (L Ortega, 2014‏) Whether we grow up with one, two, or several languages during our early years of life, many of us will learn a second, foreign, or heritage language in later years. The field of second language acquisition (SLA, for short) investigates the human capacity to learn additional languages in late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, after the first language--in the case of monolinguals--or languages--in the case of bilinguals--have already been acquired. Understanding Second Language Acquisition offers a wide-encompassing survey of this.

According to Nation (2003), L2 should be fully utilized as much as possible in a foreign language classroom (in this context, English). Though L2 should be the core language used in classroom management and learning, the use of L1 should not be abandoned as it has a minute but significant role in language learning (Nation, 2003). Conceptual knowledge in first and second languages is interdependent; meaning that learning strategies, academic content, and concepts can transfer across various languages. All in all, the point is that the mother tongue should be adequately developed prior to the introduction of a second language. In addition, the native language should not be omitted from the curriculum even if the second one is made the medium of teaching.

In a study, (Swain & Lapkin, 2000; Tang, 2002; Mattioli 2004) agreed that L1 should be utilized in the language classroom in particular with students who are not highly proficient in the target language This suggests that L1 plays an important role in the language classroom especially for the low proficiency learners. The mother tongue is of utmost importance, especially to a child. An argument has been put forth that child normally begin with reading in the first language. How competent someone is in a second language partially depends on the level of competence already developed in the mother tongue. This means that, for learners of the second language to achieve acceptable levels of proficiency, they should not ignore the first language. Also, the transfer of any language elements that are related to literacy is not limited to typologically and orthographically similar languages. Even language pairs that are considered distance, for instance, English and Japanese, exhibit high inter-language connections. The time put into developing literacy in a first language is advantageous to literacy achievement of a second language.

(Nation 2001: 296-316) stated to, When the use of an L1 translation is combined with the use of word cards for the initial learning of vocabulary, then learners have a very effective strategy for speeding up vocabulary growth.

Significant of study

The importance of research is as follows:

· through this study, draw some insights concerning the role of L1 and how L1 provides a familiar and effective way for acquiring and understanding the meaning of new words in L2 vocabulary learning.

· The negative and positive effects of mother tongue on the learning of a second language and identify them to be able to reduce the negative effects of their own and try to promote the positive impact.

· The application of L1 can effectively assist the memorization of new words during L2 vocabulary learning process.

· Focus on L2 vocabulary learning, the reason that acquisition of vocabulary has a fundamental role in learning a second language vocabulary learning is inter-related to other language skills.

Research Questions

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1) What influence does mother language have on the acquisition of a second language?

2) What is the impact of using the first language when teaching a second language?

3) To what extent does using a mother tongue boost the vocabulary learning of a second language?

4) How does a first language help low proficiency learners of a second language comprehend the meanings of new words?

Reseach Methodology

This research paper reports on a quantitative research, which will use a Questionnaire technique a variability of requests that are associated to some of them some way that accomplishes the goal that the student sought through the difficulties posed by questionnaire by posting or in any other way.The population of the present study comprises all female students who are studying English as a second language in a secondary school in Dammam city.

Ethical concentration:

Would get permission from a secondary school in Dammam city before starting this study.

Limitations of the study:

This research was investigation was directed in the two middle classes, which have continued for ten weeks. Its expected that around 75% percent will show a positive impact. ten weeks is not sufficient for the scientist to perceive all of the learners’ implementation in their lessons. It would be improved if it were complete in a lengthier time. Additional, the populace of the investigational group is insignificant, only 20 students and strength do not characterize the mainstream of the learners of the intermediary level. since the questionnaire calculated to quantify the students’ assertiveness towards in Influence Of Mother Tongue On Second Language English learning approaches might give suitable evidence about the influences Of Mother Tongue On Second Language; it seems not to stipulate enough suggestion of the students’ authentic behaving to announcement skills in their speaking presentation. In adding, since the author herself conducted the assessment of the pro-test and post-test.

Expected Results

It is predictable that my study will prove that the Influence Of Mother Tongue On Second Language to improve acquisition in the secondary school in Dammam city and will give positive impact in all English skills.

Most of the participants that were taught using both English and the local language will get high scores on vocabulary tests. There will be a negligible difference in average scores between the groups; an indicator that none of them were favored or marginalized due to the language used to teach them.
