Online Privacy is a big issue when dealing with internet usage today and it’s to a point where many users are not protected due to the data collection agencies part in the overall schema. According to Jocelyn Baird (2017), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act is an outlined law regarding the usage of data generated from those under the age of 13 and that that data use must be approved by their parent’s or guardians. (Baird, 2017) Although the protection of data for those under 13 is “guaranteed” by COPPA, this may not always be the case. I think that all citizens should be guaranteed protection and that this protection is enforced against data mining companies and social media companies collection information from users and formulating ads and other information for what’s believed to be the user’s benefit. I believe that currently those under 13 aren’t protected because of the verification process and the general access held by those using a computer. As a minor, it is very common for you to lie about your age to access new technology alongside your peers. Being so, if a site requires you to be 13 years of age to use and your 10 years old accessing it, your information would not be guaranteed protection. If this was enforced them it would allow for a re-evaluation of the data mining process and who is essentially protected on the web.
