Last Friday, on November 30, 2018, a massive data breach happened in Marriot

owned Starwood

hotels.

The breach has affected about 500 million customers’ sensitive data like credit card

information, date of birth, flight information. The spokesperson discloses that before this massive data

breach happened, the company detected an attempt to access the guest reservation database on

September 8. But,

they noticed the incident on November 19

. The security breach also happened in

2014.However,as the Marriott guest reservation information was stored in different database, it did not

affect the customers’ information (John, 2017).

How the Wireshark Network Analyzer Helps to Mitigate the above ma

ssive Data Breach?

As one can learn from the incident, the attackers was doing their best in finding the vulnerability of

the system over the last 4 years. After the 2014 breach, the company noticed the threat in September.

The question is, why this huge security gap happened knowing something bad is sniffing around?

Wireshark helps Marriott’s security practitioners by monitor, analyze and repair security issues.

As we can

learn from the above incident, there was bad activities going on in the Marriott

guest reservation database for a little while. So, Wireshark may find the potential threat and

repair the network.

result they can take immediate action to defend the suspicious activity. It clearly stated that
