The Emergency Services Sector is included in the sixteen sectors identified by the Department of Homeland Security as a critical infrastructure. The Emergency Services include law enforcement, fire medical services. Along with these vital portions are others which operate in the background until an emergency occurs and we call… 9-1-1. An attack on this sector could impact the 9-1-1 center and other related critical services. The implementation of the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) is not only required but imperative. Implementation should include some synergy between business end and the tech end.
Establishing the requirements and best practices according to comprehensive policies which communicates both the needs of the business and capabilities of IT. It feels like a very dead horse, but policy and training seem to fit into most conversations when discussing security.
Determining risk management to protect privacy and civil rights is just as crucial as the readiness of the networks. The data contained by this sector could be devastating if in the wrong hands, not to mention the personally identifiable information of virtually every citizen. This sector manages the hazardous materials and describes the response procedures in emergencies and tactics used in those responses.
Since the CSF is an ever-changing framework, the continuous measurement of the profiles would be my next step. The threats are always adapting to our defenses so we must contest them with new protections and best practices.
The balance of what is wanted and what is needed could be delicate and should be focused on security at the end
