Obesity and Overweight
Unlike in the past when malnutrition and infections were the primary threat to healthcare, nowadays, overweight and obesity are constantly increasing and taking over by storm. However, society has projected controversies to the situation that have made it look more like a social problem than a medical problem it is. Indeed, your body weight is directly linked to a person’s self-esteem; this means that how comfortable you are with your body weight can associate with your mental health. Society thus took off to do everything to empower the plus-size citizens in ways that make them comfortable in their bodies. It was a good move. However, everything comes with consequences, and this was that when people became comfortable with their weight, they did not care about losing it since societal norms prioritized it. This has been the leading factor in being overweight since people think it is okay to live like that, contradicting the medical perspective of it.
By application of Gordon’s functional health pattern, starting with the health perception, the community members are fully aware of the health risks they are exposing themselves to. However, since the society made them comfortable and proud of the situation, they feel at ease and comfortable to carry on with it because of this. This brings it to the second element of nutrition; they know what is nutritious and what is not; however, they choose not to ignore healthy, as it is restrictive and requires commitment and discipline (Deer et al., 2018). Things bring us to the following elements of excretion patterns and exercises; there are numerous benefits of exercising to the body; one of the major ones includes excretion through sweat that relives the body of toxins and unwanted substances; continuous exercise would reside to a habit of drinking water which is also a health objective, killing two birds with no stone, it also accounts for urinal excretion.
Judging from the mental status, the current society has an education index level of education high; it would be a vague assumption to put it that the community members are illiterate. For that course, they are thus fully conversant and have interacted with the educative health materials either through the internet or just from their doctors. Nevertheless, little effort has been brought forward to address the same. To complete a full health assessment, multiple resources could be reached to facilitate the whole process, which involves availability and access to the internet. The internet is a significant resource, especially in terms of mass communication, as it globalizes the world into a global village. On the other hand, a team of doctors and literate medical personnel, such as nurses, are using social media platforms to educate the public; they also would play their part.
The whole plan could easily take off since the community understands the medical side effects they are exposing themselves to, just as the other time, changing their minds to let go of the comfort that comes with weight issues and embrace both personal and collective responsibilities would be a significant cracker to it. The other strength could be the willing youth that has constantly been consuming the wrong content through social media; the same media can be improved to make the youth consume the right content that would instead influence them to live healthily and embrace the activities and responsibilities that come with it.
To sum it all up, the only reason there are still overweight and obese people who are incredibly comfortable and sensitive to comments victimizing their bodies is because of the earlier measures imposed by society to protect their interests (Favier et al., 2019). That is the biggest obstacle to the situation, and the majority would take whichever measures to ensure they are still within their comfort zones without victimization. However, despite the high exposure to infectious diseases, that would still not alter their mindset; what is required is for the general public to agree on a campaign to convince them otherwise about their health situation; despite being socially accepted and respected with their bodies, they need to go the extra mile of taking personal responsibility to ensure their health comes first, except for some cases that are rumored to be genetic.
