My 25 Hours of Volunteer

I had a humanity class this semester. The teacher require all the student to do 25 hours during the whole semester and you can chose to do it in any filed that you like. You could do it in different places. For me I was first planning to do it in one of my friend restaurant but I found out later that they don’t need any one to help them their. So I start to look for any volunteer that around spatially the semester is almost going to finish. It was hard for me to found any place. I had this problem before. I tried to volunteer before but I could not found anything.

So I talk to Tmaim ,one of my close friend. He looked at meet up website. He found out there are volunteer at the same day. We found that the volunteer had already start so we were little worry that we may not be acceptable to join them but after I call them they respond to my phone call. We asked if we could come they said it is all right. In fact they need some people today. We drove in my car for 20 minutes. When we arrived we found out it is a farm. I was really happy because I like work in farm. Also it was my first time to work in farm in US. I was little concern about the weather because it was really could there. When we enter we don’t saw anyone. We looked around and we found a small house that look like office. So we went there we knock the door. There was a woman came to us and she told us to go inside ahead then we are going to meet the farmers and they are going to tell us what should we do. When we start to walk we saw a guy working in the farm, after he saw us he rise his hand and said hey to us. He come to us and he took us to his friend and told us that he is going to show you the work that you have to do. He was such nice person any way after the other farmer came he start to have small conversation with us and asking us what school we study at. After we finish talk, he asked if we need cloth because it going to be cold. He gave us two gloves and one hat and one big coat. He told that we are going to caught some vegetables because if we keep them until the night then the temperature will go below zero which mean they are going to die. First they gave us big fork so we can remove the Carrots from the ground, then we can take them by our hand later. He told us also that we need to make sure that we are not hitting the Carrots by our big fork because doing that may led to destroy the carrots. We start to work it was so much fun. We also had a lot of conversation with farmer, he told us that his manger in college was chemical engineer but he did not like his job so left it to start farming. The clothes that they give us was really helpful, it made me work freely. We collect a lot of carrots. Later other farmers start to join us to work with us. All them are nice people, they like to talk. There was a funny guy, he likes to talk about his kids all time. After we finish the give us small walk around the farm, they show us the farm. They let us try thing. Most of things that they grow there is vegetables, they don’t have that much of fruits. They gave us long white fabric so we can cover the vegetables that can not handle the cold temperature. After we cover them, we put wight at the corner of all the long white fabric so they can stay even if there are strong wind. They putted all the carrots in their small car, some of the carrots sill small size but we had to get them from the ground because then they will just day. We get inside their warehouse. Their warehouse was really clean and organize. They have white big bored, they write all the things the had carry into the warehouse. The last place we went is a small house that build to keep the plants warm in the winter. We had to cover them too. We did the same we had to do team work so we can cover all of them without hurting the plants. This white fabric was bigger and taller than the one that out side. We covered them. We went to other house so we could do the same. All the fabric was new. We had to put them in small machine so we can take the fabric from the box. When we finished they think as for what we did and they told us that they will not able to finish the work on time if we don’t come over. Also it was chase for me to ask them about how to buy ducks because I was planning to buy my own ducks.

The next day I take to the guy his work in maryville to help people finding volunteer. He told me there are a student his name is Locus and he is planning to do volunteer out side maryville next week. He take me to him and there I meet locus. Locus tell me about the volunteer that he is going to do with other maryville students, then he gave his phone number so I can call him when the time came. He told me if I could bring other students from my class. I post about the volunteer in the group that I made for the class. When the next week came Amar and Tamim and Sary also my friend Modena decide to come too even she is not in the class. We meet Locus the DUC he give us the address then he told us to meet him there. It was around 15 minutes. When we arrived all the 8 volunteers enter the building together. We meet old lady she told us that we are going to work in putting the books in box for couple hours then we will take lunch break. We enter the big warehouse she start to explain to us that they are going to send these books to some schools, then the school are going to deliver to these books to the poor kids. She start to explain to us who we are going to do the work. Every two volunteers take their own table and some books and they start to fill them the boxes. For me I get unprepared boxes and I put some stickers so they can ready to use. After I mad some boxes. The girl in my group start to talk to me. She start to ask me where I am from then after I told her she ask me if I am muslim I was little surprise, after I told her that I am Muslim, she told me that she is too. Later she told me there are organization in maryville for muslims students and she asked me if I want to join. Then I took my boxes and I went to table by my self so I can have more space. After I whole my friend Tmim join me then I told do you want to go to pray, he said yes and then Amar join us. After pray we worked the three of us in one table. After a while the lunch break came and we start to eat all of the volunteers. The food was sandwich and salad and apple and juice. After we finish eating we start to work again my job was to write the names on the boxes and put the post of the address on the boxes Tmime job was to put the right number of books in the boxes sary job was to sticker the boxes. After awhile Sary suggest that if the two table become one table and five students work together then we are going to work faster. The other team like what Sary said and we all start to work together. We start to do more work then any time before. I am really impress of Sary leadership skills. I hope I could do something similar in the future. After we finish working, one of the women who work there start to tell us about other volunteer opportunities if we are interacted, than they show us movie about their work. They show in movie some of the people who work with them. After the movie the let us out. I would love to do other volunteer like this in future.

Three days later, I tried to look online by my self to find some volunteer but I could not find anything so I send email the same place that I did my last volunteer but they never respond. So I send email to same guy who told me about locus. He told me there no volunteer on compuse this thanksgiving then he asked me if I have car so I told him that I have. He gave me two good website. When I looked at the first one I found there volunteer tomorrow and there only five available seat. I first told my fraind Tmaim because he was seating next to me but he said no because he is going to be busy. So I post the volunteer in my snapchat group. Amar text me and told me that he is want to go and then he told me that he want to meet in the morning so we can eat breakfast together. The next day we meet in in the restaurant and we eat breakfast together as we planned. After that we want to the volunteer place together. We were late like ten minutes but that was fine. We enter the place we saw big sigh say that volunteer in the next room so we enter the room there were a lot of people more than thirty person and there was also some kids. I also so Sary there, I went to him and he told me that he saw my post and he register for it. Then I went back to my place and the begging I was confused I don’t know what to do. Most of the people were working in putting food in boxes. I tried to join but I could not there was too many people so I went back I saw to guys making boxes so I asked them I could help them with something they told me that I cold organize the boxes so I did. It was really boring and unhelpful. After awhile I found there space in the big table were they putting food in the boxes. I start to put different kids of food in every box. After I finish them I will put sticker on them then I will carry them and then I will put them above a pace of wood after we get enough boxes the machine carrier will carry all the boxes. I realize after I did some boxes that I forget to put the stick on some boxes but Amer told me that I missing to put the stickers. After while of working I felt some pain in my back so I told Amer that I am going to only put the goods in the boxes and he can carry the boxes over to the wood. I was little curse from where they get all that food. Then the boss told every one to take break for fifteen minutes and there are some coffee and water. The kid were really happy because they worked really hard. In the beark I don’t have enave corgi to talk to anyone. So I just talk to my friends. I had really interesting conversation with Amar. After the break we return to work. I start to talk to the women next to me and then I start to talk to the kids with her. I helped them organize the boxes. They start to bring new kid of food. There was a table for the food that were open because you are not allowed to put any open food in boxes. After we finish working the boss told us how great work we did and then he gave us a paper with houses that we did.

I can’t wait for the moment when I finish the third volunteer
