Essay Three Assignment: Visual Response
1. Make sure that you have read the handout Analyzing Visual Arguments included in Blackboard.
2. Locate a visual argument that you find interesting. It can be any of the following:
a) A Painting or Sculpture b) A Chart or Graph c) A Photograph d) A Cartoon e) An Advertisement
Insert the image either before your introductory paragraph or after your
concluding paragraph. Be sure to cite the image on your Works Cited
page PROPERLY.
3. Compose a four to five-paragraph essay of 650-800 words in which you address the following:
Part One: Introduction-Describe the image. Your thesis should state the
main idea of the image.
Part Two: Discuss the main idea that the image presents. Tell about its
intended audience.
Part Three: Discuss your impressions of the design and the effects of the
visual. What elements in the image support the main idea?
Part Four: Explain the appeals the visual employs and their effectiveness.

Part Five: Conclusion—Sum up your analysis.
4. The essay MUST be presented in proper MLA format, with a properly- formatted Works Cited page.

6. Bring two copies of your COMPLETED first draft to class for peer review on ___________________.
7. Turn in your final draft in the proper Turnitin folder by 11:59 P.M. CST on Sunday, ____________________.
