Visual Image Analysis

Later Abstractions 1993- 95

In Gordon Parks Foundation’s Later Abstractions 1993-95, there is an image of what is seen as wastes that are thrown everywhere. There is a water source beside the wastes and the water seems so much polluted. The sun can also be seen and it is very near the earth which has caused scorching to the ground which looks as if it is burnt. The place is all brown as if it has not rained for long and there is no green appearance. All that can be seen is dust and a scorched land. The sky is all blue and there is no sign of rain. The bushes behind have all dried and there is no sign of life.

The image is a pure prediction of what the future will look like, especially if the problems of chemical emissions and pollutions are not well handled. According to science, these will be the main reasons why global warming will take place. Indicated in the image are the implications of global warming and the evidence is given thereon (Hocking). Starting from the poor disposal of waste products, to pollution of water sources and not taking care of natural resource sin the required way, the effects are going to be deadly and in fact, there is a possibility that there will be no life ahead.

This image seems to be persuading the viewer to take a given kind of action. By showing the effects of chemical emission and poor waste disposal, the painter of this image seems to be communicating to the viewer that they should mind how they treat natural resources. For instance, the effects that can be seen include lack of rain, drying of green matter such as trees and bushes, pollution of water sources such that they cannot support or even sustain man, a scorching sun which will be unbearable to man or any other living species are among the many effects that can be seen in the image.

It is simply a call to man to mind how they interact with their natural ecological environment especially on matters of pollution and chemical emission. From the topic that is given to the image, it is a total indication that it will be in the future. This points to what will happen owing to the fact that the issue of industrialization and manufacturing is growing by the day because more and more companies are built every day and all of them are emitting gases and chemicals as well as disposing wastes. In addition, more and more vehicles are being made, bought and used and this means that more gases are being emitted. More and more people are also being born which means that forests have to be cut down and the rate of pollution continues to grow. This growth in pollution, cutting of forests and emission of gases and chemicals will continue to grow until a point in the future when the climate will not be able to sustain any of it. This will mean that the ozone layer will not be thinning but it will be no more and the sun’s sun- rays will be reaching us directly. This will also lead to scorching and burning everything in earth and it is not possible that any species can withstand the heat that will be exerted to the earth’s crust.

Although the painter does not talk about anything that can be done in order to give remedy to this condition that will be in the future, the image is giving a very stern warning so that people can mind their interaction with the natural resources.
