Syllabus You will develop a self-directed visual art project by negotiated proposal to progress skills in the techniques and processes of various specialisations within contemporary art practice, through drawing, writing and analysis or other media.
Introduction Welcome to VAR300 Art Visual Research. In this unit, you are required to contextualise and expand upon the notion of Drawing through the knowledge that drawing contains many processes, applications and techniques that can include but also extend beyond works on paper. You will undertake two intensive projects: Science, Nature and Artifice and Architectural Drawing.
In each exercise you will be required to engage and develop:
l An understanding of how drawing has been explored by artists throughout history and how it may be interpreted in conventional and non-conventional forms within contemporary art.
l An understanding of how to undertake appropriate research to formulate new ideas. l Knowledge of how to articulate your ideas through written form. l Techniques to assist in the progression of visual outcomes. l Exploration and development of digital media in your creative practice. l An awareness of cultural understanding through materials and imagery. l Confidence in critiquing and evaluating your work and the work of others.
You are encouraged to develop the necessary skills to become proactive and autonomous in your art projects/exercises. It is expected that you consult with your tutor on a regular basis to discuss your ideas and working methodology.
We hope you enjoy this unit.
Content Warning: This unit can contain sensitive or mature content that is not suitable for viewing by young persons.
Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These inform an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and capabilities which employers would value in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the Graduate Capabilities through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes notify you of what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your knowledge of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.
Your course has been designed so that on graduating you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Capabilities through the assurance of learning processes in each unit.

Pre-marking moderation
l Assessment task details are provided to students in the unit outline or prior to the assessment task l Marking criteria are made available to students in the unit outline or when the assessment task is assigned l Assessors are provided with rubric/marking guide and sufficient information to ensure fair and consistent
evaluation of student work
Intra-marking / Post-marking moderation
l Second marking of borderline student work l Second marking of outlier samples l Second marking of a random sample to check for consistent application of marking criteria and standards
Late assessment

Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.

USE OF THE BLACKBOARD APP
A Blackboard App is available to download from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Please note that the App does not support all Blackboard functions and external links such as Reading Lists and iLectures cannot be accessed. To view iLectures on a mobile device, use the Echo360 App, which can also be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Reading Lists should be accessed via web based Blackboard, e.g. Chrome or Firefox.
Please ensure you are always using the latest version of the app for best results as updates are frequently applied. Please also note that Curtin University is not responsible for the Blackboard app and any feedback you have should be made on the app directly. PRESENTATION AND SUBMITTING FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT
The format of your presentation should be well considered for the assessment of your work. It is expected that you learn to develop good documentation skills with digital photography to best present your work for online assessment. A submission which shows your working methodology and clearly presents your ideas and outcomes will help to present your work at its best. Use the provided Learning Resources to guide you as well as refer to the student exemplar folio Presentations.
All project work and items for each assessment are submitted online via the Submit Assignments link in the Assessment Zone. Please refer to information detailed below:
SUBMIT ASSESSMENTS
It is a requirement that you complete the student declaration when submitting your assignment.
Page one of your presentation must include your name and Curtin student number. Adding this information helps the marker to identify which assessment is yours. A specific coversheet is not required.
When submitting your work for assessment, make sure you include all of the information in one single file format - use the cover sheet as your first page. The preferred file format for your submission is PowerPoint presentation which may be saved as a .pdf file before submitting for assessment. Note: work submitted as multiple files will be returned to you to be re-submitted within a specified time-frame as a single file. If re-submission does not meet the required date as requested assessment penalties may be applied.
PRESENTATION AND DOCUMENTATION:
To ensure you present your best images for assessment we suggest you experiment with different settings, especially as your intention should be to convey the best possible record of your work. The assessment of your work is compromised if the quality of images is poor: e.g. out of focus, badly lit, low-resolution (150dpi recommended), or have been digitally manipulated. It is appropriate to crop images to reduce any background interference. Use a neutral background like a white wall or black/white paper to place your work on before photographing. Please refer to the Folio Guidelines in Blackboard> Study Guide and Resources.
All images presented that are not your own e.g., artwork, artist research, must be clearly referenced and provided on the same slide/page as the image or information you are referencing.
VISUAL DIARY:
You can scan your visual diary or use a digital camera to document the appropriate pages. Make sure you clearly
