Week 1 Discussion Evaluation Student: Quannessa Beasley Course: MPH/520 – Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health Assignment: Week 1 Discussion – Policies on Healthy Behavior Score: 20/30 ✅ Strengths Relevant Public Health Concern Identified Your selection of obesity—particularly among children in underserved communities—reflects a meaningful and timely public health issue. Highlighting its link to social determinants like nutrition and access to safe play areas was appropriate and shows public health insight. Use of Supporting Sources You referenced current data from Iyun et al. (2024) and Shenoy & Nayak (2023), which added evidence to support your post. This shows you're engaging with relevant literature. ⚠️ Areas for Improvement Limited Engagement with the Prompt The Week 1 prompt specifically asked: Why aren’t more policies passed to get people to adopt healthy behaviors? Your post focused on a health issue (childhood obesity), but did not directly address the policy landscape or explore barriers such as ethics, freedom, or behavioral resistance to policy change. Missing Theoretical Connection The post lacks discussion of health behavior theories (e.g., Health Belief Model, Theory of Reasoned Action), which are essential in framing why individuals may resist or adopt health-related behavior changes. This is a core expectation for the course. Post Structure and Depth The post was relatively brief and didn’t meet the expected depth for a graduate-level response. There was no direct engagement with peers or faculty, and no evidence of multiple postings across different days to meet full participation requirements. 📈 Suggestions for Improvement Fully Address the Prompt: In future weeks, carefully re-read the question and be sure each part is answered. Week 1 specifically asked about policy challenges and behavior theories—be sure to connect both. Cite and Format Sources in APA Style: Include full APA citations and ensure in-text references are properly formatted. Engage in Multiple Posts: To earn full credit, be sure to post a thoughtful response by Thursday and engage in two additional replies to classmates or your instructor across different days. ⭐ Final Comments Quannessa, you identified an important issue and backed it with data, which shows promise. Going forward, focus on aligning more closely with the weekly prompt, using behavioral theories, and fully participating in the discussion board. With these adjustments, your discussion work will strengthen significantly. Let me know if you'd like guidance on how to structure future responses or apply theory effectively.
