Video Reflection:
Davis tragically passed away before he could meet his hero, Cleveland Browns player Jim Brown. Learning from his sports journey demonstrates how inspiration and influence that Davis received from Jim Brown. I learned that Ernie Davis was emulating Jim Brown's success and even donned Brown's number (44). The inspiration, despite the racial challenges that were there at the time, led to the success of Ernie Davis in the sport. Davis, however, surpassed his hero by becoming the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. I also learned that even though he had an exceptional year as a senior for Syracuse, his idol Jim Brown had finished fifth in the NFL draft that year. I got from the video that Brown claimed that his failure to win the title resulted from institutional racism at the University. According to the video, Davis outperformed his college football role model in his sophomore year. However, I also learned that in the same way that Jim Brown's career took place during the height of the civil rights movement and other anti-racism actions, so did Ernie Davis'. His squad was advised that he could only attend the banquet long enough to receive the MVP trophy before he had to leave for other commitments. John Brown, a teammate of his, claims they all went to the dinner, while others say they did not go because of racism.
The video highlighted that Davis won the Heisman trophy by popular vote, indicating a more progressive era than Jim Brown's. Brown had failed to garner enough votes despite an exceptional performance five years earlier, but the civil rights movement had enlightened the nation, and more white people had begun to have an open mind towards African Americans. The story of a white boy who said he was drinking chocolate milk to turn black, like Ernie Davis, also exists. The inspiration of Davis and Brown led to the young white boy feeling being black is amazing and that there is power. The sports that Davis and Brown participated in showcased the impact it contributed on the country, especially in the fight against racism and building the self-confidence and esteem of Black Americans, especially the population. The sport has become a positive vehicle for change that proved that African Americans have the strength and capability to lead in sports and should be treated equally, which promoted equality in society. I learned that the huge transformation that is experienced in the United States, especially on matters of diversity, has been contributed significantly by sports that offered opportunities and proved African Americans are worth being offered equal opportunities.
