A few samples of writing for vid 3 paper, section 2. Details with examples and what happened next is key to understanding your clinical skills.
Asking open ended questions- For example, at 00:09 I ask the client “why is that worrying you?” to understand why the client is worried- Next time I would avoid the “why” question and perhaps say, “what is worrying you most about this situation?” But my question did get the client to share more about his concern regarding graduating without an internship in his field and how that impacts his ability to get a good job.
Using a reflection to convey client’s feeling of frustration- For example, at 1:10 I say, “Wow, three hours a day on research companies and options as well as distance and housing issues.” He physically relaxed in his chair and smiled when I said this. Then he shared more about his frustration.
At 4:25 I ask an open ended question “What activities do you enjoy that helps relieve stress?” –which gives the client the chance to tell me more about their exercise regimen and what they would like to change. Including when the client shared what turned into a homework assignment of walking his fat dog.
Closing- At 5:20 I summarize the key points of the summary as noted by “Today, you shared a great deal about your frustration in finding an internship that is so valuable in advancing your opportunities in the future.(opening) You are spending 3 hours a day on research and application, still working on your classes online (cognitive) and that is another challenge and has you feeling overwhelmed (affective) and a little sad as you are missing your friends. But you took some time for you today to explore these challenges and that is a great first step to feeling more like the old you.(positive stroke) You mentioned you missed exercising but did share you could start walking the dog since you are home and he is getting a little fat. (cognitive) (plus a homework prompt) Next week we can explore further how that walk is helping you and him and other ways we can find that would help you feel like the old you. (closing)
