VETERINARY OFFICE MANGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT 2

With the hustle and bustle of a very busy veterinary practice, it will always need well-

organized and effective software. Each practice has many moving parts and the benefits of using

the software are to keep records, ensure appointments are made, reduce confusion on invoices,

making sure everybody can see what inputs are being made to the patient file while helping to

maintain excellent customer service, and keep appointments moving smoothly. The two software

systems I chose to compare are IDEXX Cornerstone and eVetpractice veterinarian software. Each

software has its pros and cons and unique features to make them stand out to the practice. As a

veterinary technician, the choice maybe ultimately be yours to make and help keep the practice

running efficiently.

The IDEXX Cornerstone vet software was created by IDEXX Laboratories INC. founded

in 1983 in Maine per the website [CITATION Cor20 \l 1033 ]. They are members of the S&P

500 index and have over 9,000 employees worldwide [CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. They have

many exciting features for clients to use in veterinary practice from diagnostic to client services

for the practice at large. Some of their features are diagnostic integration, scheduling, inventory,

electronic medical records, compliance assessment, imaging integration, invoicing, reporting,

and whiteboard[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. In the IDEXX diagnostic feature, they can give you

options on in-house diagnostics, reference laboratories, telemedicine consultants, cardiopet

electrocardiogram (ECG) device, ANTECH diagnostics, Marshfield Labs, Heska, and

Abaxis[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. They even have applications like carecredit, cubex, idexx

online orders, instinct, life learn, MWI, Omnicell, OpenEdge, Patterson eshelf, review wave,

Trupanion express, Vet Source, veterinary pharmacy reference, and vetstoria[CITATION

IDE20 \l 1033 ].

The eVetpractice was founded by Covetrus in 2019 in St. Portland, Maine[CITATION

eVe20 \l 1033 ]. Unlike IDEXX, eVet has broken down in their packages of what the practice

might need. This would give the practice only what they need instead of excess features.

According to their website, the first package is the Foundation Package which includes covetrus

connect, inventory management, payment processing with a monthly credit, client

communications at an additional cost, prescription management, and lab system

integrations[CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ]. The top features in this package are a practice

whiteboard module, live chat, boarding module, pet owner portal, and automated

reminders[CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ]. The next package the website shows is the Standard

Package which includes all of what is in the Foundation Package plus telemedicine, wellness

plans, referral system, multi-site functionality, and additional training[CITATION eVe20 \l

1033 ]. The last package they have on there website is the Premium package, which includes all

the features from the Standard Package, but includes advanced reporting, enterprise dashboard

module, and a premium 1:1 training opportunity. In my opinion, Cornerstone would be my pick

for software but let us look more into each company and see what each one offers.

IDEXX has some great technical support and is available Monday-Friday 6:30 am to 8:00

pm CT and on Saturday 7:00 am-4:00 pm CT. According to their website, they are available by

phone, live chat, or email with remote access to bring a technician right to your

screen[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. They have three different types of software support

depending on what the practice wants to purchase with different features for each of them. The

first tier of support is software support where you can get software updates, electronic release

training, direct-to-technician telephone support, chat, and email support, remote access available

during business hours, and online support at their website[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. The next

tier is system support which includes all benefits of software support plus over-the-phone and

remote access installation guidance, configuration, troubleshooting support, limited phone

support for non-IDEXX certified products, virus or malware verification, dispatch of hardware

service by the original manufacturer, and you even have the option to include hardware guardian

service[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. The next tier is the sentry support which includes all

benefits from the first two support tiers plus verification of IDEXX certified backup software and

review of error logs, review of anti-virus subscription status and error logs, a general review of

the system for a potential issue, verification of database, log base, image size, and 24-hour on-

call coverage for critical software and hardware issues[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. Now the

hardware guardian service which is optional in the last two tiers is a protection plan for the

software in the practice if they choose to add it. Per the website it helps reduce hardware

interruptions and downtime, provides functionally loaner or replacement equipment, expedited

shipping, and installation on loaner or replacement equipment can be completed

remotely[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. The eVetpractice software has office hours Monday-

Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST and phone support is available after hours for emergencies

only, request forms receive responses within 24 hours, remote session, and they have chat

available through the eVetpractice software[CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ].

When looking at loss data IDEXX Cornerstone states, “the only service that ensures your

cornerstone data is stored accurately and reliably every day”[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ].

According to the website they have automated daily backup, proactive data validation, security

alerts, and faster recovery[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. They offer server-based backup which is

included in the cornerstone software[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. The eVetpractice is a cloud-

based service that will allow you to access the system wherever the practice might need it and

keep all information stored on it[CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ]. Knowing this their data loss

prevention is a cloud base service. This might be helpful for the on the go practice making house

calls or just working from home. In comparison, they both offer training via webinars. In the

IDEXX training, you can do customized training for a fee, they have educational resources for

the practice and they offer cornerstone roadshow that you can register for and attend[CITATION

IDE20 \l 1033 ]. The eVetpractice training is based solely on which package you purchased, but

they offer essentials training for new practices which include three training calls with an

eVetpractice implementation specialist, workflow customization, and one hour of employee

training during implementation[CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ]. If the practice would like they have

a premium training option that you can purchase to give more insight into the program.

Looking into laboratory services and imaging results with IDEXX the result can appear

in-house on the patient clipboard area on the software which would give you immediate access to

those results[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. For imaging results you have many options of imaging

system you could purchase; examples are image Vue DR50 digital system, image Vue cr20

digital imaging system, or imagevuedr30 digital imaging system[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ].

You would need the IDEXX web pace software to do this[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. As for

imaging, you would need to purchase one of the machines which are either vettest, catalyst DX,

and catalyst one. The software you would need is the IDEXX vet lab station which would then

connect with the cornerstone software[CITATION IDE20 \l 1033 ]. On the eVetpractice software,

you could integrate with ANTECH diagnostics and IDEXX reference labs for test code

population, electronic order submission, and retrieval of test results [CITATION eVe20 \l 1033 ].

With that why would you not go with IDEXX when you may have to pay for there software to

get imaging and laboratory results anyhow?

After looking at both programs they both have their pros and cons, but if I were to choose

a software program, I would be using it would be IDEXX Cornerstone. It seems to have more

features for the practice and better technical support. It might be a little more expensive, but it is

a better-quality product all around. Even with lab results and imaging, the practice would still

need to buy an IDEXX product just to get results to the eVetpractice software. The option of

having maybe all the features in one even if they are not used seems logical since the practice

still might be growing and need those features later down the road. The practice would just need

to make the decision that is best for them in the long run and what their ultimate long-term goal

is.
