Ascione, Frank R., et al. “The Relations among Animal Abuse, Psychological Disorders, and Crime: Implications for Forensic Assessment.” Behavioral Sciences & The Law, vol. 36, no. 6, Nov. 2018, pp. 717–729. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1002/bsl.2370.

Ascione’s article, “The Relations among Animal Abuse, Psychological Disorders, and Crime: Implications for Forensic Assessment” (2018), argues that animal abuse, psychological disorders and bad childhood experiences lead to a person becoming a criminal. Ascione also states that in most cases serial killers or criminals have experienced a bad childhood, either domestic violence, harsh parents or they have set up fires, engaged in animal abuse. The author also argues that not all children that have done the following end up criminals, but these are alarming signs seen in the childhood of criminals. He supports his argument by conducting experiments to collect quantitative data of children that has performed any of the acts and verify with the criminal records to check whether their argument is accurate.

Fishback, Price V. “Relief During the Great Depression in Australia and America.” Australian Economic History Review, vol. 52, no. 3, Nov. 2012, p. 221. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=ip,shib&db=edb&AN=83148122&site=eds-live&scope=site.

In this article, the author vividly illustrates how crime rates have increased during the time of the great depression. This shows how the circumstances cause someone to be a criminal. The author also conveys the message that due to high levels of poverty; crime rates had increased significantly. The only way for people to survive was through committing theft and robbery, as the rate of unemployment was also very high. He also states the drop in the US economy market by 30% which was a lot at that time for a developing country to survive that fall and so the people of America suffered. Unemployment rates had also decreased by 47%, so many of the laborers and workers were unemployed and the only way to survive and feed their families was by resorting to crime. From this article, it’s clear that “Machine Gun Kelly” (or George Kelly Barnes) was a victim of poverty during the time of the ‘great depression, and therefore, he became a criminal.

Grinshteyn, Erin G., et al. “The Associations of Area-Level Violent Crime Rates and Self-Reported Violent Crime Exposure with Adolescent Behavioral Health.” Community Mental Health Journal, vol. 54, no. 3, Apr. 2018, pp. 252–258. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1007/s10597-017-0159-y.

In this article, the author establishes his argument saying that emotions, like depression, anxiety, trauma and other sudden or mentally affecting emotions, do motivate a person to commit a crime. He further argues saying that these emotions disable a person from thinking straight and causes them to take indecisive decisions, which often leads to a criminal act. In this article, the author provides evidence for this argument by show results from surveys, questionnaires, and interviews. This article provides evidence for how emotions can lead to becoming a motive behind a crime. George Kelly had also gone through a divorcee and that could be one of the reasons why he had committed crimes.

Ikäheimo, Olli, et al. “Association of Family Structure to Later Criminality: A Population-Based Follow-up Study of Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients in Northern Finland.” Child Psychiatry and Human Development, vol. 44, no. 2, Apr. 2013, pp. 233–246. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1007/s10578-012-0321-2.

In the article. “Child Psychiatry and Human Development”, the author conveys that there is a possibility of childhood trauma or disturbing events that can cause a person to become a criminal. Events like divorcee and separation are mentally disturbing and causes a person to become mentally ill. The article also states that 82% of criminals have suffered childhood trauma or a shockingly bad event before they become criminals. This implies that’s emotions do play an important role in the life of a criminal. George Kelly had also faced a trauma of this sort at the time of the death of this father in law, and this could mean that he had become a criminal since he had faced a trauma.

Kaltiala-Heino. “Ethical Issues in Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry: A Review.” Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology, vol. 26, no. 6, Dec. 2015, pp. 759–780. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1080/14789949.2015.1062995.

The author mainly argues in his article on the fact that the upbringing of a child from childhood through adulthood is very essential. The way a child has been brought up by his or her parents determines the way he or she thinks and performs any action in her life. The author uses childhood forensics to provide evidence for his argument. This article shows how a criminal is made, what exactly causes one to become a criminal. The author also adds that the lack of love and attention at the childhood age causes the child to feel unloved and eventually gathers ‘evil’ thoughts in his or her mind.

Solomon, Nadia. “Redefining the Psychological Autopsy: A Proposal for Collaboration between Forensic Pathology and Investigative Psychology.” Journal of Investigative Psychology & Offender Profiling, vol. 15, no. 1, Jan. 2018, pp. 46–50. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1002/jip.1487.

To understand the role of crime forensics this article aims to provide a discussion of differences in crime scenes and how the expresses the way a crime is investigated. He suggests that the crimes are of different sorts and so are criminals, the brutality of the case depends on the relationship with the victim or the depends on the mind of the criminal. It is hard to track a specific line of forensics as every crime is committed differently, however, the author argues that through forensics and criminal psychology, it is possible to trace a pattern in which crimes are committed and trackback to the criminal. This article helps convey the message on how George Kelly had been convicted and whether if he had chances of getting away with his crimes.
