Van Gogh (Discussion)
In this painting, I see a twin bed, two chairs, a nightstand, and décor on the walls and on the nightstand. There are also some clothes hanging behind the bed. Overall, this looks like a very stereotypical bedroom; nothing too distinguishable. At first I thought it was a child’s bedroom, but once I reanalyzed, I noticed that it does not look like that in the slightest, and it is most likely an adult’s bedroom. Van Gogh communicates the notion of the space through his use of linear depth. He paints the footboard larger than the headboard to show the bed placed in the corner. He also paints one of the chairs smaller than the other to show that it is placed farther back in the room than the other chair. I personally feel as though Van Gogh was trying to exhibit his childhood room, or at least how he wanted it to be. He made the room sophisticated, which is maybe what he strives for: sophistication. I’m not sure if I have a “feeling” attached to this image; I think it’s a nice painting and I like the colors he chose. I think he should have painted something more distinguishable or something to point out that it is in fact, a Van Gogh painting. Overall, I wouldn’t mind living in this bedroom.
