Value Word Exercise

To deepen your self-awareness, philosophy and gain identity as a professional individual, you

will develop your own Coat of Arms.

In ancient times, the coat of arms was an emblem that represented an individual, family, or

country. The symbols on the coat of arms represented and identified the individual, family, or

country. These symbols were as diverse as the individuals, families or countries and

represented their spirit and values.

Each person has certain things they value and view as significant and important. These items

become their hallmark of professionalism – they become the things that you stand for. As a

person’s philosophy develops these items become more and more significant and guides the

vision of who you are as a professional.

Your task:

1. Using the word bank provided, consider the values that most represent what you stand

for. Do not borrow someone else’s style. You need to be you! Narrow your list to four

items.

2. Using your four items, find images to graphically display what you value most as a

leader. Graphic representation helps solidify what you believe in and it serves as an

important reminder of what you value most. Do not be concerned about artistic

expression; You may use any type of media i.e., clip art, magazine pictures, poster, hand

drawing, etc…

3. Transfer the graphics into a crest. You may find hundreds of blank family crests by

searching online, or create your own!
