Immunization Research Project & Presentation

100 points

Depending on your topic you will have different information to discuss in your presentation. These basic guidelines are divided between immunizations to prevent disease and topics related to immunization. Be creative and make it interesting - both on an informational and visual basis.

You will be creating an outline (due the class before presentations), PowerPoint/Prezi/PDF and giving a 5-7 minute presentation. I will determine the order of the presentations; you must be prepared the first day of presentations with your file saved on a USB/flash drive or CD (do not send as email). File must include name and topic in the title. You CANNOT use your computer. Part of your grade will be based on attendance/participation during the days of presentations. (See Rubric)

You can start by finding information in the text. The Center for Disease Control (www.CDC.gov) is a good starting place for immunization information; make sure you go to the area for healthcare personnel. If you are using the vaccine manufacturer website, use the science-based information for the medical personnel. Information to cover about disease-specific immunization (exa. Polio or Hepatitis B) :

 What disease is it preventing? (bulk of the presentation) o Viral OR bacterial, include picture(s)

 Enveloped/naked/genetic info/gram positive/gram negative o Mode of infection o At risk populations o Characteristics of the disease o Alternative treatments

 Type of vaccine (attenuated, recombinant, toxoid etc) o How is the vaccine created? Administered? Are their boosters? Schedule? o Who needs this vaccine and when? Why? Travelers? o Other ingredients o Possible side effects

 Is this a mandatory vaccination? For whom?

 Would (or have) you/your child get this vaccination, why?

 Etc… Information to cover on vaccination TOPICS (example Autism and Vaccines)

 What is the topic and why is it a concern in the field of immunizations?

 Summarize current and past research

 Who is influenced by the issue at hand?

 What is the future outlook?

 Some of the “topics” are quite broad and need to be neatly summarized to key points o See professor with questions

 Etc….

Requirements:  Outline (HARD COPY due class period prior to start of presentations):

o 1-2 pages o Must be in outline form, covering the bulk of the information o Include sources on outline

 Media o Powerpoint/Prezi/PDF presentation (saved on USB/flash drive & submitted to TurnItIn)

 Typically 10-20 slides  Student name and topic must be in file name (or -10 points)  Bibliography (include at the end of your PowerPoint including source of images)
