The article, “How the Ghana Think Tank Challenges the White Savior Complex”, discusses the way in which a lot of individuals have joked severally about having "first world problems" ("How the Ghana ThinkTank Challenges the White Savior Complex", 2019). Individuals joke about these problems with the implication being that individuals in places with weaker infrastructures face more serious problems than the individuals living in developed countries. This joke reflects an aspect of classism where it brings about the idea of the globe having hierarchies with the developed countries offering help to the less developed countries. The ides of classism is fallacious and characterizes unbalanced power dynamic. In the article, a Ghana-based radical collective art group identifies problems experienced in developed countries like the US and compares them with what is being experienced in third world countries. From the research carried out by this group, they noted that most of the problems being experienced in the US result from architecture which worsens social isolation. The idea of isolation can be evidenced in some of the activities which America conducts, such as the American Dream of the single-family home. This group conducted a project and named it "American Riad" to challenge the preconceived notions of global hierarchy.
In the video, “The new American Dream”, Courtney Martin insists that the only thing which can make America great is the spirit of reinvention (Martin, 2019). The dream has to do more with community and creativity than with the dollars and cents as it is currently pegged on. Involving the community should be the first thing America should put into consideration while in the endeavour of reaching up to its dream. Individuals in the community are the ones who face the consequences of inflation and recession. As Courtney presents, there are approximately 14.8% of persons living in poverty, and they need money to get them out of this situation. Also, all the persons need to be protected by the government against exploitation by financial institutions and employers. It can be hard for the government to achieve the American Dream without involving and protecting the community because the dream is all about the people and without them, then the dream is not valid.
Antoinette Carroll watched as her hometown erupted into protests after the police shot Michael Brown ("Want To Fight Inequality? Forget Design Thinking", 2019). This was followed by demonstrations for weeks as people were protesting against the police. The city was critically divided along the racial lines. Community leaders and groups were meeting behind the scenes to discuss the consequences of the most recent events and make a conclusion on what to do to remedy the adverse outcomes. When a community becomes dived across the racial lines, it is always important to ask individuals to join and work as a team. Carroll was, however, doubtful if the meetings which were being conducted would have any positive impact in the ill-fated community.
Carroll took a step into solving the issue by leading a workshop for 24 hours to come up with creative responses to the death of Michael Brown. The event resulted into creation of Creation Reaction lab, which currently holds workshops and carries out other projects which focus on various areas which affect the marginalized community. Workshops help in equipping individuals with skills of solving problems without involving violence or vulgar language, and also on how to be mindful of the words one utters. The concept of coming up with workshops can be related to redesigning a better world by starting with the people around.
In the video, “Justice by Design”, Carroll insists that some of the issues which individuals face in the course of their lives are as a result of systematic design ("Justice by Design | Antionette Carroll | TEDxHerndon", 2019). If these systems can be redesigned and individuals get introduced into a new way of living together as one, then the issues to do with divisions across the racial lines can be eliminated. Carroll is for the idea that systems of oppression, injustices, and inequalities are designed and it’s only the people who can redesign them starting with their own communities.
