Westfield Horton Plaza

Westfield Horton Plaza is a large, five-level outdoor shopping centre situated in downtown San Diego. It is known for its bright colors, architectural uniqueness, and odd spatial rhythms. It stands on 6.5 city blocks adjacent to the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter. It was the first successful downtown retail center since the rise of suburban shopping centers decades earlier.

Issues & Shortcomings The Plaza suffers from many shortcomings which hold it back from being as productive a place as it can be for Social Interaction and Inclusivity.

- The architecture design is confusing and lack of guideboard, people easy to get lost. - The square in front of the mall is too small and empty. - With the developing of shared bikes, like ofo bike and lime bike, the DiscoverBike station lost its original

advantage. The DiscoverBike station does not fit the environment. - Plenty people spend their time in the outdoor part of the mall but scarcely shop inside the outlets that the mall

offers. - There is poor distribution of activities and outlets. Food places are scattered and there are few inviting brands

that might incentivize people to use this place as a shopping district. - Weak security system, suicite and gunshot happened there frequently.

Redesigning and Improving

● Build guideboard ● Adding kids playground,sitting

area, and cafe shop in square ● Remove the DiscoverBike station ● Strengthen settle brands ● Food and beverage should be

gathered ● Enhance the safety control system

Conclusion ● The architectural style is unique and bold, which in theory would inspire a large visiting

population and cause it to be a hub in the heart of the city but this is far from the truth. ● Many issues exist. ● Security is the most serious issue. ● Redesign is necessary for future development. ● Refer to other outdoor shopping malls and develop it
