The Indian River Lagoon is a waterway along the east coast of Florida that is made up of three sections: the Mosquito Lagoon (starting in Volusia County), the Indian River Lagoon (spanning multiple counties), and the Banana River (in Brevard County). Click on the Definition: Indian River Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon Estuary (with county-level details) links above to learn where this area is located on a map of the State of Florida. Our case study involves a large algae bloom crisis occurring in the Indian River Lagoon. Just this week, a large fish kill occurred in the Banana River portion. A significant contributing factor to this algae bloom, like most, is nutrient pollution from storm water run-off. Much of the pollution is nitrogen and phosphorous which are both in fertilizer products. Marine and environmental professionals are urgently working to find ways to restore the health of the Indian River Lagoon and prevent the bloom from spreading and worsening. Algal blooms are not only catastrophic to marine life, but they have financial costs and human health effects as well. The Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, is one such group of marine and environmental professionals that focus on the conservation and health of the Indian River Lagoon. They have partnered with Volusia County Environmental Management and local colleges and universities to form a multi-institutional initiative, Project H2O, which provides outreach to the community promoting a healthy Indian River Lagoon habitat. The new Project H2O coordinator, Mallory, has received feedback that the fertilizer ordinance that the Volusia County Council enacted last year is not being complied with nor enforced due to lack of knowledge in the community. Because June 1, the start of the fertilizer ban season, is nearing, Mallory must devise a plan to get literature out to both landscape companies and stores that sell fertilizer. She wants to focus first on businesses along the Indian River Lagoon in Volusia County because this is where the ordinance applies and to help this county reduce runoff that may worsen the current bloom south of that area in Brevard County.

Questions

ITEM 1, confidentiality (2 points):  Should Mallory be concerned about employing any steps noted in the module resources to ensure confidentiality of the spatial data she is using? If so, why, and which methods do you recommend? Include at least one APA in-text citation within your answer to justify your response based on the articles linked in this module.

ITEM 2, space-time representation (2 points):  After the first year of Mallory's outreach, how might she consider the concept of the "space-time representation" noted in the module resources? For your answer, think about location information that could tracked and displayed with associated date information. Go back to the references linked above, and include at least one APA in-text citation within your answer to justify your response based on the articles linked in this module.

ITEM 3, new visualizations (2 points):  If Mallory did incorporate a space-time (i.e., location-date) component to her 3D Maps, what fields could she add to the Excel workbook, and how do you recommend she use them when developing new visualizations? For your answer, think about Mallory's goals in the case study.
