6.1 – Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Washington D.C. have legalized recreational use of marijuana; one of the few all arounder substances that can cause addiction.
1
6.2 – All psychedelic drugs can cause a diverse range of experiences with users depending on a number of factors.
2
6.3 - Traditional cultures have ceremonies and social contexts in which psychedelic drugs are used. These traditions have established patterns such as the use of peyote by the Native American Church. These rituals are purpose driven and are neither done alone or used in a spontaneous fashion. Many other psychedelic (all arounders) substances like psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca or cohaba vines and salvia sage have been used by Native American cultures for centuries.
3
6.4 - Endocannabinoids are the most prolific neurotransmitters found in the human body, those receptors in the brain respond to THC and those outside of the brain respond to cannabinol and cannabidiol found in marijuana.
4
6.5 – Potentially the greatest successes for medical marijuana are found not in the psychoactive substance THC but in the other ligands, especially cannabidiol or CBD, for which further research is warranted.
5
6.6 - Because the brain is a lipid organ and the chemicals in marijuana are fat loving drugs it takes weeks for these drugs to leave the brain. This is why withdrawal from marijuana is not as obvious or pronounced as alcohol or opiates.
6
6.7 – The core arrangements of certain atoms in a molecule generate specific pharmacological effects. These core arrangements are known as the structure activity relationship of a molecule.
7
6.8 – Other cacti and plants contain significant concentrations of mescaline i.e. San Pedro cactus, cactaceae plants and fabaceae beans.
8
6.9 - Ecstacy, methylenedioxy-methamphetamine is a synthetic phenylalkylamine psychedelic. Designer modifications of these substances are potentially infinite.
9
6.10 – The measure of lethal potential of a drug measured by its therapeutic index. This is the ratio of its effective dose divided by its lethal dose. The therapeutic index of jimson weed is very small compared to that of LSD.
10
6.11 – PCP and ketamine produce the same effects at nerve and brain cell synapses.
11
6.12 – Salvia divinorum is still federally legal but listed as a controlled substance by many states.
12
6.13 Though uncommon, foragers of psychedelic mushrooms still misidentify deadly mushrooms like Amanita phalloides as psychedelic. A. phalloides cause liver failure that can result in death.
13
6.14 The prohibition movement needed a new direction after liquor was made legal and found marijuana to be fair game for a campaign. Most of the people who used it in the 1930s were Mexican or Black jazz musicians who were easy target populations to attack during the racists attitudes of the 1930’s. Many people feel that this campaign was fueled by William Randolf Hearst who owned forests, paper pulp plants, and newspapers across the United States. It is said that Hearst was concerned about the use of hemp to produce paper which threatened his business model.
14
6.15 - Even though the legal age of smoking marijuana in states that have made this substance legal is 21 it has already impacted the experimentation and use of the drug because the perceived risks of using it have gone down. Substance abuse by adolescents increases when their perception of it as being harmful decreases.
15
6.16 - The cilia in the lungs are like tiny brushes that move foreign particles away from the air sacs of the lungs. These play an important function in lung health and though marijuana does change the structure and density of the cilia the worst outcome is the use of marijuana and tobacco which seems to mow down the cilia and keep them from performing efficiently to rid the lungs of harmful particles.
16
6.17 Synthetic marijuana although legal is more dangerous than marijuana the synthetic chemicals are much more powerful than the THC present in marijuana.
17
6.18 - Once again because marijuana is a fat loving drug it can stay in the system longer than one would expect of other drugs. Law enforcement is now focusing on the use of marijuana with alcohol because it has been found that this combination of drugs is causing most of the traffic fatalities, as opposed to alcohol or marijuana alone.
18
6.19 – Cannabidiol is not psychoactive like THC; so hybrids that produce higher concentrations of it are less popular to those seeking more of a “high” than medical benefits.
