Due Date: December 14, 2020 at 11:59 PM. This will be an online submission.
Our Final class meeting will be Tuesday, December 14, 2020 at 5:30-7:30 PM. We will meet for the final and I can answer questions about the final as well as ask you your thoughts about the class.
Paper length: The Final paper, as indicated in the syllabus, it should be approx 5 pages- 1300 - 1450 words (6 pages max.).
This is based on roughly 250 - 300 words per page (a list of Works Cited does not apply to the word count).
This does not include a “works cited” section that you need to include. The “works cited” doesn’t have to be on a separate sheet of paper, you can just put it after the concluding paragraph of your paper.
Please use at least 3 academic sources- none of which are Wiki or the ones listed below. A list of ways to find academic sources should be in the Midterm module as Resources. Sites like JSTOR and EBSCO are perfectly fine to use.
IMPORTANT: You cannot use sources such as CourseHero, UK Essays, GradeFixer, SparkNotes, etc. (there are many others that I could list here that are the same type of websites) as sources for your paper. These are NOT academic sites.
Make sure to use quotes in order to support your ideas. Citations can be done using (author, page #) and listing in a “Works cited” at the end of your paper. Please see the sample papers posted earlier for the Midterm for what I'm expecting your paper to look like.
TOPICS
I am providing suggestions for your Final paper. Choose only one of these to write on. You should choose only one from either (A) (B) or (C) – you don’t have to combine one in order to complete your Final paper.
These are all pre-approved Modern and Post-Modern artists. You can choose another, but you must clear it with me first:
They are as follows:
(A) Explore an artist
Choose 2 works by only 1 of the following artists (none of the works that you choose to write on can be ones that we’ve already discussed in class):
Painting and Sculpture:

Poetry:
For this option please choose 2 longer poems (or 3 poems if 1 is shorter) by only 1 of the following poets
● Wallace Stevens ● Emily Dickinson ● Robert Frost ● Sylvia Plath ● Billy Collins
For all of the above: based on your research, explain how each work relates to 1 of the 4 themes that we explore in our class. Do this for each work by the one artist you have chosen. Also include how they relate to each other if you see a connection between the two.
NOTE: You cannot write on any of the works that we have already discussed in class.
(B) Comparing Western and non-Western art
You can choose an artist or artwork incorporating something after approx. 1800 AD (since you already did your earlier research essay on something before 1700), that compares/contrasts the Western and non-Western worlds. Please check with me first before writing about this topic.
If your subject does not have to be something within the “West” (i.e. terracotta warriors of China, or the Pyramids of Egypt). However, if it isn’t, you need to compare/contrast it with something from the “West” that is similar to your topic using 1 of the Hum themes.
I do not want you to choose any works topics that we've covered in class already. Thanks.
(C) Analyzing non-Western film adaptations
You can choose from one of these movies:
● Black Orpheus ● Throne of Blood ● Ran
These are pre-approved films. You can choose another film that may adapt a Western story from a non-Western culture, but you must get approval by me beforehand. NOTE: You cannot choose Disney adaptations such as Mulan or Aladdin, for example, for your paper.
Consider the main character(s) of the film. Write about 1 of the 4 themes of our class and how the story of that character relates to the theme that you have chosen. What have the filmmakers changed in order to bring in non-Western cultural elements.
Make sure to include how the film is both shot and edited to help develop the theme of that film.
On the next page, I have also included a sample paper that I wrote on "The Sixth Sense" that you can use as a guide.
Again, the final paper is due December 14, 2020 at 11:59 PM.

Do. Not. Plagiarize. I’m not expecting groundbreaking work in this paper. I’m just trying to find out what your opinion is. It’s okay if your opinions are based on someone else’s ideas, just tell me that they are. So, cite every idea or sentence that is not your own. Otherwise, you will get an “F”.
Quick checklist:
□ Are you keeping your focus on the 1 Hum theme and 1 category from A, B, or C that you are using to discuss your topic?
□ Do you have 3 sources- none of which are Wiki?
□ Consider asking someone to proof your paper for spelling / grammar. Make sure you are breaking your paragraphs into clear subjects of discussion.
□ Remember to talk about the work as it relates to understanding culture, not just giving a plot summary, or what happens in the story, without explaining why it's relevant to understanding the work as a whole.
