Descriptive Essay June 15, 2020 ART1000 Foundation of Visual Literacy: Summer 2020 Descriptive Essay: The paper (3 to 4 pages) roughly 1000 to 1500 words must be double spaced, using #12 font, (Times New Roman or similar).

I Choose a single artwork from The Detroit Institute of Art, there is a list on the reverse

side of this document to choose from. Under normal circumstances the ideal approach to this paper would be to view the artwork firsthand, but of course none of us are experiencing normal circumstances. The link below will take you to the museum’s archive of images https://www.dia.org/art/collection?

II Label discussion with the following information, artists name (if known) title, country or culture, time-period and medium (materials used).

III. Describe in your own words, with detailed discussion the following. a. The visual appearance; describe every element of the art work; include in the

description, the materials used to create the artwork, the size, and the setting, a complete, detailed visual description. This description is how your eyes see, not an interpretation of symbolic, emotional or abstract meaning. No detail is too minor to include, count the number of figures in the work, mention all the color used and where it is used. The reader of this paper should be able to visualize the artwork from the description that you have written. The description of the artwork will most likely make up the body of the paper. In your description try to convey to the reader-your audience-precisely what it is you are discussing.

b. This paper should include an in depth description of all the visual aspects of the artwork you have chosen. One approach to starting the description is to offer a general overview of what the artwork is: a sculpture made of marble or an oil painting, and then a brief outline of the subject matter. This can and should then be described in minute detail, everything that you see when looking at the artwork.

c. Concentrate on the visual aspects of the artwork. A minimal amount of research is required for the paper. The majority of the paper will be a precise description of all elements included in the composition with a brief outline of the artist’s biography.

d. Include a citation page, listing where research information was gathered. This paper requires very little research outside of looking at the artwork and describing it.
