About the Final Exam

The final exam will be open to take between 8:00 am (PST) Tuesday, June 9 (when it will open) and 11:00 pm (PST) Thursday, June 11 (when it will close). You must log in and take the 90 minute exam sometime during this window. Please note that you will be kicked out of the exam at 11:00 pm Thursday June 11, even if you have not finished. This means you must start the exam 90 minutes before it closes to give yourself the full time to complete it. It is your responsibility to make sure you have appropriate technology and a good internet connection to take the exam. Unlike quizzes, you will only be able to take the exam once.

The final exam will be posted following Module 7 under the class Modules tab. You should go there when you are ready to begin taking it.

You will have 90 minutes to take the exam. If you have an accommodation from Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSP&S) to receive extra time, please notify me before you take the exam. Canvas will display how much time you have remaining while you are taking the test.

Some advice: of course the test is "open book" and you can use the resources on our Canvas site, but you will not have time to complete the exam if you are trying to look all of the answers up as you take it. It is essential that you study in advance to prepare for the exam. If you run out of time or get locked out of the exam when it closes, you will receive a zero score on all unanswered questions. You will not have the ability to extend your time based on your personal needs and there are no make-up exams.

Material

The final exam covers the second half of our course, Modules 5, 6, and 7. The format is the same as the midterm. There will be three types of questions: multiple choice questions, true-false questions, and short answer questions, where in a paragraph or two, you will answer a question that is provided. Some of the quiz questions will be recycled for the multiple choice portion, but other multiple choice questions will be new.

Test banks will be used for the exam questions, which means that every student will take a different exam.

Strategies for studying ● Review your notes from the readings,

lectures, and films ● Review the key terms lists provided in

each module ● Review the study questions provided at

the end of each chapter of reading ● Review the questions from previous

quizzes

Example short answer

questions:

Your exam will contain several questions that you will be required to answer in your own words. These will come at the end of the exam. Generally these

questions will require a paragraph or two to answer but you should use as much time as possible to answer them as fully as possible. They must be answered in your own words.

Here are some examples. It is possible that one or more of these will be on your test. Other questions will come from "Closer Look" pages, video lectures and information presented in the modules. In addition to reviewing those, I would advise you to review information on the following questions before you take the exam:

1. Which of the paleoenvironment hypotheses have been used to describe early hominin diversity, and which have been used to describe bipedalism?

2. Name some specific behaviors associated with Homo erectus in the areas of tool use, subsistence practices, migration patterns, and other cultural innovations.

3. What physical and cultural features are unique to archaic Homo sapiens? How are archaic Homo sapiens different in both physical and cultural characteristics from Homo erectus?

4. What are the skeletal and behavioral traits that define modern Homo sapiens? What are the evolutionary explanations for its presence?

5. What evolutionary processes are responsible for producing genotypic/phenotypic diversity within and between human populations?

6. What is the relationship between the sickle cell mutation and the Plasmodium parasite? Would having the HbSA genotype still be advantageous in a region where such parasites are not common? Why or why not?
