Race and Ethnicity - Discussion

Board #9.1 I would like you to watch the follow Ted Talk on Race. When you are finished I would like you to write on one point of the talk that you found interesting and on a time that the concept of race may have affected your life. This can be something negative, positive, or something you have witnessed that may have stayed with you. Once you are done you need to comment on two of your fellow students reactions to the video and their life experiences. For this post you will need to post before you read any of the others replies.

I found this Ted Talk very interesting. It is interesting that the obvious fact that darker pigmented people are closer to the equator while lighter skinned people are closer to the poles. This makes sense as the sun UV rays are stronger near the equator. I also learned that vitamin D deficiency can effect a persons overall health in lowering immunity and contributes to the over all decay of a persons health. Fortunately, my skin color has never had a negative or positive affect on how others treat me. Although the topic of skin color has never had a negative effect on how people precieve me, it is unfortunate that it is not like that for others. I feel that we are living in an age where skin color has more of a negative effect on ones day to day life. If you open up any news outlet you can see that race and skin color can be found as a topic of conversation. Like the case of Ahmaud Arbery. This is the case of an innocent black man who was jogging, minding his own business and two white men, felt that he was a threat and gunned him down. They thought he looked "suspicious" in my opinion, because of his skin color. Unfortunately we see this too much in the news.
