TEMPLATE FOR RESEARCH

PROPOSAL

Directions: Please use the headers as listed below in your proposal. Use narrative form (not list) unless otherwise noted. Do not use first person.

Introduction (Part I)

Purpose Clearly explain the reason for the proposed research study. Consider both the purpose for the researcher and the possible contribution to the field or discipline of study.

Justification of Proposed Research Question This section will reflect an explanation of the problem or inquiry needed. In other words, provide evidence of the NEED for the study using local data or references from the literature of its critical importance. This is a rationale statement.

Research Question State the research question and nothing more. Hypothesis State the research and null hypotheses and nothing more.

Definitions of Key Terms List the discipline-specific terms relevant to your study and the definition relevant to the proposed study. Often studies use terminology that has multiple understandings and need to be clarified for this specific research. Be sure that your definitions are specific and measurable. For example, if you are using a specific assessment to measure something, name the assessment.

Review of the Literature

Synthesis prior research findings related to your research question. Your synthesis should reference at least 5 primary source articles. Refer to Writing a Short Literature Review handout by William Ashton for step by step directions on how to write your synthesis.

Methods and Procedures (Part II)

Research Design Explain the research design to be used (survey, experiment, observation, etc.) and why it is appropriate for the stated purpose and research question.

Sample Describe in detail the composition of the study sample. Discuss how the sample will be identified.

Data Collection and Instruments Describe in detail how data will be collected in the study (how, when, where, by whom, what methods, etc.). How are you using multiple methods and multiple data points in your process?

Name the instruments that will be used to collect the data (e .g. name of survey, name of test, etc.). Discuss the reliability and validity of your data collection methods and instruments. How reliable and valid are the instruments included?

Include a sample data table you would fill in once you collected data.

Ethical Considerations Describe the ethical considerations related to the proposed study. This includes, but is not limited to informed consent, voluntary nature of participation, and anonymity.

Procedures List the detailed steps required to implement the study. You may enumerate the steps, however, use complete thoughts and sentences in describing each one.

Study Internal Validity Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed study's internal validity. Refer to the list of possible threats presented in class.

Study External Validity Discuss the limitations in generalizing or replicating the proposed research because of the n ature and design of your study.

References

List all references to literature mentioned in the proposal, including those of the research studies listed in Part I in APA style. Refer to web-based resources for examples and regarding APA style.

Appendix A: Timeline

Add a timeline for implementation of the study procedures.
