Unmanned System Research Project (USRP)

The company you work for is planning to expand in the unmanned systems industry. Your department has been asked to develop an unmanned system to bring to market. Your department will specifically be responsible for the power, propulsion, and maneuvering system design.

You must choose a real-world application that you think an unmanned system could be useful for and then design the unmanned system based on the information you have learned in this course.

You may choose an application that already has an unmanned solution. In this case, you must design an improved system and then compare and contrast the specific differences in order to prove that your system is indeed an improvement over the existing solution. For example, you may want to redesign a drone used for powerline and infrastructure inspection. Clearly, there are many versions of drones out there, but maybe your design can offer something to make it even better. Your analysis would include how the current system is designed, how you chose to design your new system, and why you chose the way you did.

My plan is to redesign the DJI Drone that is used for powerline and infrastructure inspection and make it better. It might be any other drone, but it should be used for the same purpose (powerline and infrastructure inspection), but I must be specific.

All of the following topics must be covered in your paper:

· Description and purpose of your unmanned system - Identify the need for the system (political, economic, social issues), the problem being solved, and the unmanned system's impact.

· Explanation of the unmanned system's design that contributes to the mission, including:

· Type of power source and power storage capability

· The choice of the propulsion system

· How the system maneuvers

· The environment in which the system operates

· Operational environment considerations that have factored into the design.

· The outcome and lasting impact of the unmanned system

Research Paper Requirements

· 10-11 double-spaced pages of content (not including title page, references, etc.). There are no bonus points for going past 12 pages; part of the learning exercise is to be able to say what needs to be said in the prescribed length.

· Current APA Manual format - See this  Sample APA Paper (PDF)/Purdue. (Links to an external site.)

· Must include:

· Title page

· Abstract

· Introduction/Problem statement or research question

· Comparative research

· Cost estimation

· Risk assessment

· Regulatory/legal considerations

· Analysis, Conclusions, and Recommendations (2-3 pages)

· References Page

· Pictures, figures, diagrams, and tables as required – add as an appendix if needed (not counted toward page count requirement).

For this week, I will start with writing the Introduction/Problem statement or research question. Your Introduction/Problem statement should consist of a title page (APA format), and 2-3 pages explaining your application.
