Chapter 7: GCU Resources: A Reference Guide for Traditional and Online Learners
INTRODUCTION
Grand Canyon University (GCU) values each and every student and, therefore, has
established a multitude of academic and nonacademic resources to help support
students during their time at GCU. Studies have shown that universities with strong
support and engagement opportunities for students tend to have a higher graduation
rate (Koenig, 2019).
GCU offers many resources for both traditional and online learners. This chapter
provides reference guides that may be used as an at-a-glance resource for contact
information and services offered by the different departments at GCU. Reference
guides below include general college contact information, Student Affairs, Spiritual
Life, academic resources, physical and mental health resources, and career resources.
An online icon appears in front of services that are available only for online students.
The traditional icon appears in front of services that are available only for traditional
students. Information that has no icon in front of it indicates that the service is available for both
online and traditional students.

STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES
Paige Weinstein
Paige Weinstein became a peer mediator in 2018 when she was a
junior majoring in special education and elementary education. She
consistently served as a peer mediator at Desert Oasis Elementary
School in the Tolleson Elementary School District. Weinstein, now a
teacher at ACES, said, “I have been able to incorporate the theories
behind it all into my classroom." Weinstein said that working at The
ACES is not a typical setting, but it provides her with more
opportunities to resolve conflicts. "I do it in a more informal setting
of allowing both parties to speak without interruptions and talk
about how they feel," she said. "We are able to get to the bottom
much quicker. Plus, my students have gotten used to it so now we don’t even have to always go
somewhere separate, and they will talk about it as the issue is happening. I’m a huge advocate for our
other classrooms to use it too to process!” (personal communication with Paige Weistein via text
messages on 1/22/2021)

Michael Massoff
By Cooper Nelson
GCU Today (https://news.gcu.edu/2014/12/winter-
commencement/)
Michael Massoff worked as a chiropractor for more than two
decades. He lost his job during the U.S. economic collapse in
2008 and moved to Arizona in 2011 to open his own practice
but was forced to close after only a year.
Massoff needed a new education, but a return to school after
nearly 28 years away from the classroom would be difficult.
He had open-heart surgery in 2012 and met a nurse who
influenced his decision to pursue a nursing degree.
“After the surgery, I had this middle-aged, male nurse and we
talked about how he left a job in business to become a nurse,”
he said. “That’s when I knew what I wanted to do and that
going back to school was a possibility.”
After being contacted by a University enrollment counselor,
he knew a nursing degree at GCU was the perfect fit.
“Going back to school after that long was definitely an interesting transition,” said Massoff, who
completed the fast-track nursing program in 18 months. “When I first went to school, we didn’t have
computers and we went to physical libraries."
“Getting up to speed with the technological shift was definitely the hardest part.”
Massoff said he spent a lot of time in the GCU Library and on the phone with tech support to learn to
navigate the University’s online learning environment. He credits his ability to graduate to the help of
GCU staffers and the support of his wife and 4-year-old daughter, Jane.
“When I walk across that stage, it’s all for my daughter,” he said. “I want to have this diploma so that I
can show it to her to prove that anything is possible.
