Week 5 Discussion - Conference with Staff

Monday, November 18, 2019, 11:24 AM

The cafeteria staff can ask that I not be present because there may be something that he/she would like to discuss in private. The nature of the conference might be a sensitive one.  Although, "I don't want her in here" is not the way to talk to someone, everyone has a right to privacy and privacy should be given if the person request it. The principal should first discuss her tone and then ask if there is a problem with me. Depending on the response, the request would be granted and another note taking alternative would be considered.

Some people may want to discuss some issues that they do not want anyone else to know about. I would respect that person's request and see if the principal could possibly get another administrator to take notes. The ethical standard of having another administrator in the room might not make the staff member feel that way.

If I were the principal, I would respect the person's wishes, but explain to her that she should conduct herself more professionally when making a request. That was not an appropriate way to make a request. Placing demands on people is not acceptable. I would not want to escalate the situation, but I would let her know. I would also do what was in the best interest of the staff member. The notetaker should not be offended if asked to not be present for privacy reasons and the cafeteria member would receive her privacy. I would take notes as best as possible or record the conversation to go over after the conference.
