Week 7 Discussion - Meeting Attendance
Meeting Attendance

I would tell the fifth grade teacher that it is not permissible to miss a staff meeting. Our staff meetings are put on the calendar before the school year begins, and we have to honor this. If I let one staff member miss for a hair appointment, then that is not fair to other staff. It is a case-by-case basis when someone has a medical or family situation, but not a hair appointment. Teachers should know the rules in advance, but also have an understanding that sometimes life happens, and unavoidable situations occur. I would say yes this teacher does not value staff meetings because they believe going to a hair appointment is more important. If I let the teacher leave for the appointment, then I am also agreeing with her that the meeting is not important and that leaving for hair is more of a priority. I have a mentor that is very understanding of personal matters, and I plan to be the same way, but I also think that priorities should be taken into account. There is a difference between leaving for a doctor’s appointment and leaving for something personal and typically fun.
