Week 7 Discussion - Meeting Attendance
Week 7 Discussion - Meeting Attendance

This afternoon the fifth grade teacher comes by your office and asks if it would be possible to miss today's meeting. She really hates to miss, but she has had to re-schedule her hair appointment at a local salon and the only time she could get in is today at 3:30. She was told that if she doesn't take that appointment, it would be a three-week-wait for another appointment.
It is really important that staff members are aware of meetings, deadlines, and events in a timely fashion. Staff meetings are every Wednesday at 7:30am at my school. Teachers are aware that this is a required time to meet, unless of a medical emergency or absence. I would first make my staff aware at the beginning of the school year of the requirements and norms for staff meetings. This information would be given in advance to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Medical emergencies arise and should be taken into consideration, but knowing this information, I would explain to my staff member that the meetings are required and that it is important that she does not schedule anything during this time. Because the situation occurred, I would allow her to go, but reiterate to her that this is an allowance and to please keep into account the importance of attending meetings. It should only be permissible to allow a staff member to miss a meeting in emergency medical situations. Teachers should know the rules and expectations in advance. Allowing this teacher to keep her hair appointment will not set a precedent for future meetings in my building. The teacher would have an understanding about this exception and the expectations set at the beginning, regarding meetings. I would also reiterate to the staff the importance of staff meetings and the expectations set for attendance.
