Data-Driven Instruction and Assessment

· How will you respond? Other staff members are waiting to hear what you will say.

I would allow teachers to voice their frustrations before responding. Teachers have to feel safe enough to get their feelings out on a specific issue. Once I have allowed teachers to voice their concerns and opinions I would ask teachers to begin to craft their own assessment strategies to ensure that students are being assessed in the classroom while incorporating strategies for taking district and state assessments. 

· Why should data drive scheduling and the school calendar? Someone is going to tell you they have never seen a school calendar with the word "data" written on it. It is your turn to start changing a culture that has probably been part of the school for a very long time.

One thing I have learned in my five years of teaching is that parents really do like to be involved. Therefore, the calendar should reflect data so parents can be aware of what concepts and topics students are learning, the types of assessments that will be given on those topics and also help prepare students to begin the process of understanding their data. 

· How will you start to turn negatives into positives?

Involvement is key to making sure that everyone feels they have a voice. Students, teachers, and parents will need to work together to understand why the data is important and more beneficial. More often than not students want to know the why behind an assessment so helping them understand that is important and not just giving them the rationale of "because we said so." Allowing everyone to be included is the beginning of turning the negative vibes into positive ones.
