Introduction to Comprehension Assessment

How will you have to prepare for the new assessment?

Students are expected to study vocabulary stems for two weeks to help them prepare for higher reading, standardized test questions, and for students to understand word stems to help them with other words they might not have had. Each week they work on analogies, sentence completions, and true and false. At the end of two weeks they need to sort the word stems into parts of speech and use a handful in a sentence. Although this allows me to know if they have “memorized” the word stems, it could be temporary memorization. To prepare for a new assessment I could use a portfolio or presentation, or maybe even a flipgrid video where students explain how the word stems help them define words in other contexts.

Do you believe this assessment will be a valid measure of your students' learning?

I think that a video or presentation of word stems would let me know a students learning and could be more concrete for their understanding because it would be more hands on research rather than memorization.

How has this video motivated you to look at other assessments that you may not have tried before and as a principal, challenge your staff to do the same?

I think in larger districts such as mine it is easy to get stuck into a rut, and follow what you are told instead of using what you are given to create something more engaging. I think that as a future leader it is important to remember to think outside the box, especially this time of year! I think I need to almost create an idea sharing time or “I tried something new or saw something new” time to share during staff meeting. Lastly, this goes back to peer observations, the more teachers can get into each others classrooms the better we can expose each other to best practice strategies.
