Training and Development
Unit V Assignment
In Unit IV, you completed a safety and health training assessment for one of Carter’s departments, and you established training goals and objectives for a specific training topic. In this assignment, we will develop a lesson plan for presenting the topic to the workers. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the following course learning outcome:
3. Develop strategies for communicating safety and health training in the workplace.
Review Carter’s case from the Unit I Assignment, follow the instructions below before completing each exercise, save all of your work to this template, and submit it in Blackboard for grading.
Instructions for completing the assignment: Using the goals and objectives worksheet you submitted as a part of the Unit IV Assignment, complete a series of exercises (Exercises 5.1 through 5.7) to develop a lesson plan that will meet the course objectives identified for your selected topic.
Exercise 5.1: A lesson plan often includes some sort of reading assignment. For this exercise, identify at least two sources from the CSU Online Library that you would have your attendees read for the training. Please format each source using APA style.
Source one: Machine Guarding (1910.212). (2019). Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, 1. Retrieved from http://eds.b.ebscohost.com.libraryresources.columbiasouthern.edu/eds/pdfviewer/pdfviewer? vid=2&sid=9f5534ec-6ec8-4230-acf5-ddb2921ed329%40pdc-v-sessmgr04

Exercise 5.2: With at least 75 words, provide a brief description of the location where the training will take place.
The training shall be conducted in two different locations. At the commencement of the training, the students will be asked to meet within the training which is set up with tables, an overhead projector, screen and chairs. Flip charts will be set in diverse locations in the training room to allow the student to be able to break off in small groups while working on the class activities. Two restrooms, a vending machine as well a watercooler will be placed outside the training room for the efficient accessibility of the student. The training will also move out the room and out to the production floor where students will be able to view actual machines as well as take guards that are being utilized. Exercise 5.3: With at least 50 words, provide a somewhat detailed description of who should conduct the training. What type of trainer do you want? What type of qualifications should the trainer have? What else do you want in a trainer?
The organization’s safety officer will offer the training as he is trained and has adequate knowledge regarding the machine guarding requirements, workplace safety, and OSHA standards. The trainer needs to have significant presentation skills, as well as he should be quite personable and encourages student

interaction. This is essential as it allows the students to share their experiences and take part in the class activities. Also, the trainer needs to ensure the class sticks to the provided topic without getting off.

Exercise 5.4: This exercise involves drafting the initial details for the lesson/presentation. (You do not need to write the lesson yet—this is just a detailed description to get started.)
Name of the lesson/presentation: Machine Guarding Safety Training
Expected length of lesson/presentation (Time): Approximately 4hours
List relevant learning objective(s): Attaining an adequate understanding of the machine guarding requirements as outlined by OSHA standards.
Provide a brief description of the lesson/presentation and how it would be delivered:
This lesson will comprise of machine guarding presentation which references the OSHA Standard 1910.212. Additionally, PowerPoint slides, multiple group activities as well as short videos will be used to ensure the effectiveness of the presentation. After the presentation, the students will head to the production floor where they will be introduced to the different machines and guards used on them.
Exercise 5.5: Next, draft a classroom or workplace activity that involves peer learning.
Activity 1
Name of the activity: Identifying defects in a picture
Expected length of activity (Time): Approximately 30 minutes
List relevant learning objective(s): Identification of the issues linked to machine guarding and establishing recommendations to resolve the issues.
Provide a brief description of the activity, including how students would participate, how students would interact, how the trainer would prepare, what type of equipment is required, and the knowledge or skill gained:
The students will regroup into small groups where each group will be offered a picture with diverse machine guards. The students will point out the issues and also offer appropriate recommendations to resolve the identified issue. Every group will select one member who will be responsible for capturing and scribing the information on a flip chart ad report the group's findings and recommendations to the class. Also, the instructor will offer pictures with diverse guarding hazards to the student groups for discussion and reviewing, to enable them to understand and identify machine guarding hazards.

Exercise 5.6: This exercise involves drafting two additional activities that you would like to include as a part of the training.
Activity 2
Name of the activity: Machine Guarding terminology activity
Expected length of activity (Time): Approximately 15minutes
List relevant learning objective(s): Learning the various terminologies related to machine guarding
Provide a brief description of the activity, including how students would participate, how students would interact, how the trainer would prepare, what type of equipment is required, and the knowledge or skill gained:
The students will be provided with a worksheet that defines the various terminologies linked with machine guarding. The students are required to match the terms to the correct definitions within 15 minutes and share their results. This will allow the students to achieve knowledge on the various terms used in machine guarding.
Activity 3
Name of the activity: Case Study
Expected length of activity (Time): Approximately 30 minutes
List relevant learning objective(s): Identification of the causes as well as the contributing aspects and developing solution
Provide a brief description of the activity, including how students would participate, how students would interact, how the trainer would prepare, what type of equipment is required, and the knowledge or skill gained:
Students will regroup into small groups where each group will be offered a case study to review the accidents that might have occurred following inappropriate use of machine guarding. Additionally, the groups are required to identify the root cause and the contributing factors as well as develop recommendations for correcting the hazards and report their findings. Students will attain an adequate understanding on way to identify the cause of hazards as well as recommend appropriate solutions.
Exercise 5.7: Describe how you would document who attended the training. Your response should be at least 100 words.
An attendance sheet will be created and it will comprise the training title, training date, time of the training, training location, name of the trainer and the students will be asked to sign the attendance sheet to confirm their attendance at the training session. Additionally, a quiz will be administered to be able to document as well as assess the students understanding of the presented course material. Every student will also be awarded a certificate of completion to indicate they completed the training. The documents will be kept in the files of the employees as proof that they attended and completed the training.
