Unit Lesson Throughout this course, we have used famous films, cartoons, and television series to demonstrate ethical practices and their importance within an organization. Although the use of these examples is sometimes extreme, they clearly demonstrated some questionable ethical practices. In the case of The Godfather, the pressures associated with financial dealings dramatically demonstrated such issues. In other cases, we use comedy, as in the case of the Andy Griffith Show and M*A*S*H, which focused on the legal aspects and the development of relationships. Generally speaking, companies drive practicing ethical behavior. After all, character matters in personal/social settings, and it also matters in organizations. Salesforce.com, which has donated millions of dollars toward education grants and technology and other non-profit ventures, is an example of a company that has held itself to a high standard of ethics. Starbucks also demonstrates good ethics with its initiatives as an environmentally conscious company. Goldman Sachs has voiced its support of marriage equality, and Ultimate Software reigns supreme with its treatment of its employees with a 100% paid health plan and an even match on their 401K. Patagonia started its 1% pledge in 1985, which states it will donate 1% of its sales to help save the environment. Microsoft donates over $1 billion annually to charities and non-profit organizations. Google has even extended itself to abide by the motto “Don’t be evil” through regular donations to sustainable energy initiatives, such as renewable energy projects. Google also provides its employees with free health care, free legal advice, a fully-stocked snack pantry, on-site cafeteria, and on-site nursery.
