HY 1110-17O-9, American History I Unit VII

Unit VII

Welcome to Unit VII Welcome to Unit VII. In the last Unit we looked at the dramatic growth of the country during the Age of Jackson, which is often called the Age of Common because the masses felt empowered politically, socially, and economically. The problem with that is the growth and the pride masked serious troubles, which is the focus of this Unit. Women, natives, and blacks felt marginalized in American society during the Age of Jackson.

Christians increasingly become concerned that the country was on the wrong path as it hurled toward free-market capitalism and the profit motive. The Second Great Awakening swept the country and launched a large number of reform movements, from vegetarianism to organized labor to abolition. As the quarrels about abolition grew with the expansion of the country across the continent it became the defining political issue of the day and increasingly polarized the political system into pro-slavery Democrats focused on the south and anti-slavery Republicans focused on the north. The country fractured with the election of 1860.

Do have a title page Absolutely have in-text citations in proper APA format (citations in the body of the essay using parenthetical references). For paraphrased material use the format (author, year) such as (McKay, 2017). For quoted material remember you must have quotation marks properly placed and a citation that includes the page number, for example (McKay, 2017, p, 143) Definitely have a reference page even if you have only one source Have an introduction where the last sentence of the intro states your main point (the thesis) Have a multiparagraph body Have a conclusion Definitely double space the whole document Do NOT use Wikipedia, about.com, history.com, etc. – use your book and if you need to supplement use scholarly articles from scholarly journals Do NOT copy and paste from online content – you’ll get caught because all essays are run through SafeAssign to detect plagiarism Do NOT buy a paper – you are smarter than that Do NOT overquote – quoting should be very limited and really try to write your paper using your own words entirely – paraphrase from sources and offer your own conclusions, explanations, and insights. But remember paraphrased material from a source still needs to be cited in the body.

This Unit has two graded components. The first is your usual Journal assignment. You know the parameters there.

The other graded assignment is an Essay. Just a couple of things to keep in mind with an essay. Follow APA guidelines. CSU has several writing resources for you at the Writing Center but if you need additional help one of my favorite sites is: APA help
