Social Readjustment Rating Scale
• Use the table on the next slide to record events you have experienced in the past 6 months and the past 12 months of your life.
• On a piece of scrap paper, make a 6-month column and a 12-month column. Using the table on the following slide, write the numerical value of any event that applies to you within those time periods.
• If an event happened to you 3 months ago, it should be recorded under both the 6-month and 12-month columns. If an event happened to you 8 months ago, it should only be recorded under the 12-month column only.
Stressful Experiences
• Once you have recorded your life events on scrap paper, you will use addition to generate your total for each column.
• Add the numbers in the 6-month column to get your 6-month total.
• Add the numbers in the 12-month column to get your 12-month total.
Scoring
• Notice that this inventory does not distinguish between positive or negative events; they are considered stress predisposing regardless of how you interpret the event.
• Total your • Events for 6 months that total more than 300 points indicate
high life stress. • Events for 12 months that total more than 500 points indicate
high life stress. • High life stress indicates an increased probability of
developing psychosomatic problems. • Additional research has shown negatively perceived events to
be more stress predisposing. • There is a gender difference, as females report more stressful
events than males.
