Certain aspects of jobs make those jobs desirable to

people. What aspects from the following list would you

consider important in your job, and why?

Skill variety: Variety of skills required to do the job

Job tasks: The amount of jobs tasks required to

perform the job

Autonomy: The freedom to do your job the way you

want to do it

Feedback: Receiving feedback quickly and efficiently

Importance: Understanding the role of your job and

how it impacts others

Think of a job you had. It can be a job you liked or disliked. On a piece of paper, rank each item from 1-7, with 1 being dissatisfying and 7 being satisfying.

 Skill variety –

 Task variety –

 Autonomy –

 Feedback –

 Importance –

After ranking each item based upon the job you selected, follow the formula below.

 Skill variety + Task variety + Autonomy = Total

 Total divided by 3 = Total

 Total x Feedback = Total

 Total x Importance = Final Total

Formula Example

Using the formula on the previous slide, an example has been generated below.

Example:

 7 + 7 + 7 = 21

 21 divided by 3 = 7

 7 x 7 = 49

 49 x 7 equals = 343

Note: You do not have to use decimals. Your final total should be between 1-343.

What It Means…

Your score represents the level of job satisfaction you have

with the job you selected. Scores 200 and higher indicate

that you are highly satisfied with the job based upon the

five categories of criteria. Scores between 100-199 indicate

that you are you satisfied enough where you consider the

job to be adequate. Scores 99 and lower indicate that you

are not satisfied with the job in some capacity. Typically,

when people score 200 and higher, they selected a job that

is a potential career job. Scores 99 and lower are usually a

temporary job while you work to find find a path to your

career job, and scores in the 100-199 range could go either

way.
