Unit IV Motivational Techniques Transcript

(0:00-1:00)

Dr. Sonya Rogers: In this unit, we will discuss how our intentions can affect

our motivations, and as a result, that can affect our behaviors. So leaders

must pinpoint what motivational techniques they can use to motivate

employees to work a certain way or to behave a certain way. So, Dr.

Hargadon, what motivational techniques have you witnessed that might

have influenced workers to perform a certain way?

Dr. John Hargadon: So motivation is actually a very broad, very wide,

scoping, wide scope of this conversation. There are various techniques for

motivation, so the critical piece really is for each leader to understand that

each individual follower is going to be motivated by something different. For

one person, they might be motivated by the possibility of positional

advancement; for someone else, it might be a monetary reward that's going

to motivate them; for someone else, it might be recognition.

(1:00-2:00)

So the key takeaway is that leaders really need to take time to get to know

each of their individual followers, so that they can understand how best to

motivate their followers to put forth the best efforts that they can put forth.

Sonya: And so, there are probably common things of what does motivate

most workers. But like you said, all of our workers are different. So what

really inspires one person might not be as trivial to another, or it may be

something that they consider most important. And I think these are

questions that should even be asked in interviews so that the supervisors

know ahead of time what their workers are like, or what they look forward

to, and what will motivate and inspire them to do well.

John: Certainly, and in other units, we talk about culture, and so this all

really very much ties in together. Someone who is going to be motivated by

power or wanting to have personal gain and recognition maybe

(2:00-2:15)

wouldn't fit into a culture that's going to be a little bit more of a team

orientation. So you're right; so that is definitely a good piece to try to fit into

the puzzle for sure.

Sonya: Mm-hm.
