Leadership 2
Unit II Hiring Transcript
(0:00-1:00)
Dr. Sonya Rogers: In this unit, we will discuss the role of leadership, and
how leaders can determine what trainings are needed to make sure that
their followers know exactly how to perform well. So Dr. Hargadon, what
would you say it's important for leaders to consider when they are trying to
hire the right people for a job?
Dr. John Hargadon: So there's actually quite a few variables to take into
consideration when you're trying to hire the right person for a position. The
first, of course, is the person's background. Do they have the skills,
experience necessary? Even if they've not necessarily held that specific
position before, have they held similar positions? Or their skills might be
transferable, or have they demonstrated an ability to be highly trainable and
so that they can pick up the skills pretty easily.
But even potentially more important than technical skills might be sort of
people skills, soft skills they call it. So that they are able to interact with
their teammates, if there's any kind of conflict that they have if they've
demonstrated
(1:00-2:00)
inability to effectively resolve conflicts within their group and the team to
understand the importance of the team's success as opposed to having a
personal focus. And then of course, the final piece is do they fit with the
culture? What is it that the culture values? What is it that the organization
values?
And how does that fit into the culture, and does the individual that we're
looking to potentially hire into this position have the demeanor and the type
of personality that we're looking for? Some organizations are highly
competitive, and they're looking for somebody who's gonna be super
competitive. Other organizations are gonna be a little bit less competitive, a
little bit more family orientated.
And so each organization is going to be different and individual, and not one
of them is not necessarily right or wrong. But as you're going through that
hiring process you definitely want to keep all of the skills, the ability to
interact with the team, and the team dynamics as well as a fit for the culture
of the organization.
(2:00-3:00)
Sonya: And it's not always easy to tell from the beginning if they will be a
perfect fit.
John: Right, and so perfect fits are going to be hard to find, of course, but
working with individuals within a team to try to come up with interview
methods to try to figure out how to determine whether or not that person's
going to fit with the culture.
And then also you can assign mentors, and you can do some things with
them once they're brought on board to help them assimilate into the culture
of the particular organization. So it's not just the hiring process, it's the
hiring, the onboarding, and then through the entire training evolution that
culture can be instilled in that individual.
Sonya: And I think that's very important, and it's not just the main
supervisor who does the hiring; it's everybody combined that make a team
effort to ensure all parties are working together so that everything is a
positive result at the end.
John: That's it.
