Course Description

Explores computer literacy topics in a very basic, hands-on environment. Presents the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, the Internet, operating systems, and current application software within Microsoft Office Suite.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Describe the relationship between digital basics and computer hardware. 2. Generalize the impact of software applications on computer software and hardware. 3. Explain the relationship between peripheral equipment, networks, the Internet, and intranets. 4. Apply the principles of basic Excel functions. 5. Examine the current electronic media sources to include the components that make the World Wide Web operate

with webmail. 6. Discuss the impact recent trends within the computer industry have on information systems. 7. Describe file and database concepts such as data management tools, database design, structured query language

(SQL), and database security.​ 8. Identify the computerized tools and practices utilized in today's business sector.

Prerequisite(s)

No prerequisite courses are required by CSU for enrollment in this course.

Credits

Upon completion of this course, the students will earn 3 hours of college credit.

Course Structure

1. Study Guide: Course units contain a Study Guide that provides students with the learning outcomes, unit lesson, required reading assignments, and supplemental resources.

2. Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit.

3. Unit Lesson: Unit Lessons, which are located in the Study Guide, discuss lesson material. 4. Reading Assignments: Units contain Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook and/or

outside resources. 5. Suggested Reading: Suggested Readings are listed within the Study Guide. Students are encouraged to read the

resources listed if the opportunity arises, but they will not be tested on their knowledge of the Suggested Readings. 6. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): Non-Graded Learning Activities are provided to aid students in their course of

study. 7. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are part of all CSU Term courses. More information and specifications can

These resources are always accessible and can be reached through the library webpage. Requirements: You will need Excel 2007, 2010, 2013, or 2016 to complete this project. You will also need the following file(s): 1010excel.xlsx.

Project Background: You have been hired by the Bahamas Cruise Line as an analyst. You will assist the cruise line staff in record-keeping, revenue generation, and overall efficiency. Your project will be broken down into the following three sections: Worksheet& Workbook Management, Formulas & Functions, and Charts & Subtotals.

Part 1: Worksheet & Workbook Management—Rename and organize the worksheets within the workbook, and re-save the workbook itself by following the instructions below:

1. Click here to access and open 1010excel.xlsx. 2. Save the 1010excel.xlsx file as your “student ID number_last name.xlsx” (ex: 12345_Jones.xlsx). 3. Rename Sheet 1 to Formulas&Functions. 4. Rename Sheet 2 to Chart. 5. Rename Sheet 3 to Subtotals. 6. Move the Chart worksheet to the right of the Subtotals worksheet. 7. Create a fourth worksheet using your student ID number as the name. 8. Save the file.

Part 2: Formulas & Functions—In this section, you will assist the sales manager in categorizing the company’s revenue sources and how each one relates to each other. You will use formulas and functions to create totals and/or averages of the revenue data following the instructions below. Make sure you are in the Formulas&Functions active worksheet before you begin:

1. In cell B2, create a function that totals Jan. through Dec. sales for Online Reservations. 2. In cell B3, create a function that totals Jan. through Dec. sales for Telephone Reservations. 3. In cell B4, create a function that totals Jan. through Dec. sales for Sales Calls. 4. In cell B5, create a function that totals Jan. through Dec. sales for Activity Companies. 5. In cell B7, create a formula that adds the annual totals of all four categories using cells B2, B3, B4, and B5, which will

give you the total annual revenue for the Bahamas Cruise Line. 6. In cell C2, create a function that displays the average for online reservations from Jan. through Dec. Repeat this for

the other three categories of revenue. 7. Save the file.

Part 3: Charts & Subtotals—Create a pie chart that compares each revenue source in the month of January, and use the subtotals feature in Excel to total three separate categories of revenue. Use the following instructions:

Make sure the Chart worksheet is active before you begin.

1. Create a pie chart using the range A1 to B5. 2. Slightly detach the sales calls piece of the pie from the rest of the pie chart. 3. Save the file.

1. Sort the list by category (Activities, Hotels, and Retail) and add a row underneath each category, titled “Subtotal.” 2. Use the sum function in Excel to display totals for the three categories on this worksheet. 3. Save the file and submit for grading.

Follow the directions on page 414 of your textbook under lab assignments, and complete the following lab assignments. Do not try to open the labs by clicking on the icons in your e-book. Simply follow the directions in each assignment, and complete the assignments in a single document.

Browser Security & Privacy: Complete numbers two through four. Working with Cookies: Complete numbers two through four. Working with HTML: Complete numbers two through seven.

You have three lab assignments. You must show your work (such as making screenshots to show your instructor that you completed a certain step). Make sure you identify each lab and each step (e.g., step 2, 3, etc.). You must submit a title page with this lab assignment. Submit all your labs together in one document titled Lab Report.

Unit VI PowerPoint Presentation

Read pages 546-547 in your textbook about how changes in information technology (IT) have transformed the travel planning industry. For this assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation at least eight slides in length (not counting the title and reference slides). Your PowerPoint presentation must address web-based travel services and their value to the customer. The question is, what is the value of these travel services? Choose any web-based travel service that you want. Include information about the following aspects of the industry in your presentation:

Identify how recent technology trends in IT and the computer industry have changed the travel planning industry. Describe the role of computer technology in the travel business and how this affects the travel industry becoming part of today’s global economy.

Your PowerPoint presentation must address all of the following:

The first slide must be a title slide that includes the title of the presentation, date, your name, and course name and number. The last slide must be a reference slide using APA formatting. You must include at least one graphic in this presentation. Use the speaker notes section to discuss your slide so that the reader may follow along. You must include at least one resource from the CSU Online Library and one other resource (which may be your textbook).

Unit VII Scholarly Activity

Answer the following questions thoroughly, and submit in a document. Each answer must be at least 150 words in length. Cite your sources.

1. Describe seven database models, and give examples of each type. 2. Provide five examples of data you would store in a real, integer, text, logical, date, memo, and BLOB data field. 3. Using a real-world entity like a recipe file or collection of some sort that can be stored in a database, divide this

information into fields and record types. Explain the steps you need to take to normalize the data. 4. Explain in your own words the differences between sorting and indexing. 5. Imagine that you must access a library card catalog using SQL. Write an SQL query that you would use to search for

any books by J. J. Parsons in a table called Books, where author’s names are stored in a field called Title. 6. Explain the extent to which encryption, user privileges, and audits can secure a database.

All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Unit VIII Article Critique

Using the CSU Online Library, locate an article related to answering the following question: Why are computerized programming tools and secure programming a concern in the business environment?

Be sure that you examine programming tools and determine secure programming principles and/or development. Your article critique should consist of no less than three pages, and the article you choose should be no older than three years. In your article critique, you should do the following:

Write your critique in APA format. Begin with an introduction that defines the subject of your critique and your point of view. You will need to identify and explain the author’s ideas. Include specific passages that support your description of the author’s point of view. Defend your point of view by raising specific issues or aspects of the argument. Offer your own opinion. Explain what you think about the argument. Describe several points with which you agree or disagree. Explain how the passages support your opinion. Conclude your critique by summarizing your argument and re-emphasizing your opinion. For each of the points you mention, indicate specific passages from the text that provide evidence for your point of view.

Grading Rubrics

This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities.

Rubric categories include: (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments).

The Discussion Board rubric can be found within Unit I’s Discussion Board submission instructions.

The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment.

Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting “Tools” and then “My Grades.”

Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Discussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades.
