Deconstruct the Source Write a one-paragraph summary. Answer questions based on your source. Summary Li Charmaine Anne, a Chinese by heritage and a Canadian under citizenship, where she grew up and paid her taxes, presents the stereotypes and resultant discrimination and the negative emotive roles of stereotypes concerning people of colour. She explains how odd it seems to people that she is Canadian yet Chinese by her appearance. The origin of such a perspective could be drawn from the fact that most of the Canadian public figures and famous people are whites. To this extend, to people, she appears as a fake Canadian. Such as discrimination and stereotyping seem to follow her up as she tours the majority of the European countries. For example, she misses sunscreens meant for her skin because they have whitening, ideal for white ladies, and a male sunscreen. Her friend, an Indo-Canadian who travels to Asian countries, receives the same perspective and stereotyping. To Charmaine, the world has been shaped to accept the white organization and discriminate against people of colour. A white man can book a ticket and travel anywhere without questioning and assumptions about their heritage, but that is not the case for people of colour. She resonates with Kevin Oldfield on minimal privileges for the people of colour and factors in money, level of education, and western European heritage.
Write a paragraph that answers the following questions If you're using a Narrative: What makes the narrative seem truthful, important, and relevant? Why should the narrative matter to other people today? What voice or perspective does the narrative allow us to hear that is perhaps often hidden? Moreover, what do you think are some other possible perspectives on the same issue/problem raised in the narrative? In other words, how would the same experience/issue/problem look from a different perspective? The narrative based on the heritage of the author and her citizenship could be truthful. She sites well-known or expected and experienced scenarios in the world for people of colour. Being a person of colour does not make anyone less of a human being; the origin of the stereotypes, discrimination, and resultant minimal privileges can only be dealt with through social and public sensitization. Its significant for everyone else out there since the discrimination of the people of colour has been with us for more than five centuries or more; people of colour have been second-class citizens if not slaves, and this has to end immediately. Often, we read these stories in the writer's voice; this diminishes our ability to understand what it is like to be in the writer's situation. Her narrative compels her audience to become her and involves the audience by mentioning many places that the majority identify. This narrative thus becomes self convicting rather than educative. By setting three different perspectives on the same article, she expresses her Indo-Canadian friends, her Chinese friends, and the people she meets during her travels, and her identity. Slowly and gradually, it gravels onto us readers falling in either of the mentioned categories of perspectives.

Scenario 1 You copy a paragraph or an image from an Internet source and paste it into your COMM 171 essay. Is this action acceptable or unacceptable? Why?
This action is unacceptable because it is an academic offence under plagiarism. The image is another person's original work that has been submitted for grading as mine. The correct way to do this is to cite the image or the text before citing it properly. Alternatively, the ideas in the paragraph of an image can be paraphrased and appropriately cited or used for analysis with the correct citation.
Scenario 2 You and your friend complete an essay that your instructor said must be done independently, and each of you submits it as your own work in different sections of COMM 171. Is this action acceptable or unacceptable? Why? This action is unacceptable because the instructions were based on independent work; thus, consulting and doing it with someone else can be viewed as cheating which is an academic offence. The lack of academic integrity could lead to the suspension or termination of an academic study. Scenario 3 You conduct research on a topic and paraphrase it in your COMM 171 essay by using your own words and a unique sentence structure. You use synonyms where possible. You include an in-text citation and a reference list entry. Is this action acceptable or unacceptable? Why? This action is acceptable because it is the correct way of doing a research paper, especially when using other sources of information. The approach also supports the originality of the research paper and shows respect to the author. Citing sources is also a sign of interest, capability, and curiosity. |

THIS (Online), Retrieved from Annotation: Li Charmaine is a freelance writer based in Vancouver and British Columbia. Over the short course of her career, she has featured in highly selling magazines such as This Magazine Van Pride Magazine, Currents: A Rice paper Anthology, Plenitude Magazine, among many others. In her narrative “I’m not a fake Canadian” (Anne, 2020), her thoughts on travelling as a person of colour, she dissects the experiences of her travels around Europe. She obtains individual stereotypes against people of color. She cites other bloggers who share her idea and pushes forth to convince her audience. She uses compelling words and characters that resonate with her audience. Using a broad geographical scope to create her material provides sufficient basis for her arguments; thus, this peace is relevant when discussing discrimination and minimal privileges for people of colour.

Annotation: All the authors of this article are lectures in various French universities. Majority are of Chinese origin and have been involved in sensitization of people against discrimination based on race. In this article, they shed a light on the plight of the Chinese nationals or heritage persons in other countries during this global pandemic. They have been discriminated against and denied their rights for movement.

Annotation: Heider, a renowned Telemedia writer, political activist and collaborator in many humanitarian services and movements, sheds light on why the news in developed countries only covers white people. It is worrying as the countries are made of both whites and people of colour. The relevance of people's colour in countries seems to be quantified on the interest of the economy, which is discrimination and should be ended. Source 4 APA entry: Patel, E. (2019).
