Work Breakdown and Solution approach

Introduction

Walmart is currently one of our largest retailers, worldwide, and has its business in everything from retail to ecommerce. Walmart was created in 1962 by Sam Walton in Rodgers, AR. It has now become a household name and serves billions around the globe. The company came up from working its way through rural areas on to the heavier populated areas, ensuring that there would be one at least every 50 miles or so. The company is now worldwide including Mexico, China, Canada, etc.

The Company recently had a surge and increase in the amount of good that were being requested from Warehouse #20, which is already one of the busiest distribution centers in the company’s large number of centers. With the rise in community requests the company has decided to increase the size of the already, 1 million feet distribution center based in Houston, TX. They plan to add on another 500,000 feet so they can increase the workload coming into that one center. The General Manager states that this increase in the Warehouse size will increase the amount the company has coming in, since this one also delivers to stores and other warehouses in the state. Which would make them #1 in the country.

Timeline

Deliverables of Project are:

• Project Directions (Meeting & InVision)

o A few options will be laid out for the company to agree upon. Contractors will also meet up with the team and discuss their plan of action. Budget will be agreed on. Walmart is responsible for choosing which plan that we move forward with. Site inspection conducted. Contractors given information on getting access to building and procedures.

• Start of construction (Meeting & Equipment set-up)

o Based upon approved design direction, timeline, budget, and construction designs for all construction required for Walmart Warehouse #20. This allows for rapid production and getting employees prepared for construction. Supervisors need to give employees safety updates with construction going on in the building.

o Walmart will include placement for contractors and help them get set up in the location. As appropriate, they will also leverage existing site plans for the building.

• Construction begins

o Contractors begin construction which should take around 6-9 months.

• Project Completion

BA Approach

For this project, we plan to increase the size of Distribution Center #20, which is one of the busiest distribution centers for the company, and therefore incorporate ECommerce and distribution to stores and other centers of smaller capacity. We plan on the project taking about six-nine months seeing that the warehouse is currently around one million square feet and we plan to extend it around 500,000 more square feet. Lead project manager for the project will be Tonjicay Warren. We also plan to add three new stakeholders for the increasing in size, since the new center will add on more profit.

Solution Approach

The Solution Approach for this project would include making sure that the contractors work does not interfere with distribution center employees and that they can complete project in timely manner. Main management for the center will have to help come up with a plan that works for everyone, since the center is open 24/7. It is imperative to complete project in a timely manner but also with perfect quality so stakeholders can see that project will definitely increase not put more strain on profits. Catorgories are as stated below:

Requirements for Project

Quantitative Analysis

Requirements for Project

• We will utilize any existing resources they have throughout the duration of the project.

• Find contractor capable of reaching requirements with good quality work.

• Design and develop a plan to meet the needs of the company.

• Add additional resources that might help them as far as organizational change within the project.

• Procedures, safety instruction, and processes may have to be changed for employees in order for them not to interfere with work of contractors.

• Give contractors timeline and work times

• Work with GM to produce a plan for contractors that does not interfere with employees and allows them to finish in timely manner.

Identified Risks

• Employees that break safety procedures

• Stability of the add-on to the building

• Quality of contractor work

• Safety of contractors

• Plan exceeding timeline

• Building structure problems

Justification Statement

The purpose of this project is to increase the size of Warehouse #20 and we also want to ensure that safety concerns of workers and contractors are also considered a factor throughout the course of the project. While we have all ensured to have new policies and procedures passed on to both sides, we still have to ensure that everyone is doing exactly what they are supposed to do throughout the duration of the process. Organizations do tend to have safety issues when it comes to projects and we want to make sure that that does not happen during this project. The broad topic of workplace safety has received attention, including from the government, but assumed low-risk environments are not the focus of that attention. It is especially important to us that we finish without any added problems, according to the timeline. Furthermore, this project will be provided added profit to the company and the employees, following its take-off and success. I further hope that it may provide the organization with more stakeholders.

Quantitative Analysis

Surveys and Questionnaires conducted on Employees to see how they feel about the project itself.

Also we will need to find out old information about the building from the past few years.

Are there any problems that can slow down project completion?

Conclusion

In order to have timely completion we must have cooperation from all of those involved in the project. We are hoping for a very smooth timeline unless we have problems arrive. So far, no problems have been spotted. We appreciate your help and cooperation throughout the duration of the completion.
