Unit 6: World War II – Part I

· The information required to complete these tasks can be freely found through focused online research, but it could be beneficial to check an official text that has been used in the past. A copy of the text (with watermark to prevent copyright infringement) can be found here:

· Page numbers found on worksheets refer to textbook pages, but it is not essential to use the textbook to accomplish this work

Part I: Knowledge and Comprehension

· Complete Part I of the “Road to War” document attached

· This part has two steps that deal with identifying the relationship between major concepts that set the stage for World War II

Part II: Outbreak of War and Canadian Contributions

· World War 2 is a fascinating and an extremely large-scale event that cannot be fully covered through the high school lens. The scope of our exploration of World War 2 will again work to highlight the matters of explicit historical significance and the roles that Canada played in this event. Further exploration of this event continues in the 20th Century History course offered at your home schools.

1) Road to War – Questions and Analysis

· Complete Part 2 and 3 on the document “Road to War”

· Questions may be answered in point form, except for question 12 – this will require a paragraph response

2) Rise of Dictatorships Summary and Analysis

· Complete the Chart and Venn Diagram Organizer on the document “Rise of Dictatorships”

· This task will require you to perform some independent research for information not included in the Counterpoints Text

3) World War II Begins

· Complete the questions on the document “World War II Begins”

4) Major Battles of WWII

· Complete the organizer information for the document “Major Battles of WWII”

· Note: The section of significance should be filled out and in cases of Canadian contributions ensure you are specific in your references.

Part 3 – Synthesis Creation:

· With World War I the events leading to the outbreak of war were summarized as six concepts that created the acronym M.A.N.I.A.C – (militarism, alliances, nationalism, imperialism, assassination, and a chain-reaction). World War 2 began for very different reasons, though connections to World War 1 do exist.

Your Task:

· Through watching the two above videos, completing the above assignments, and reviewing pp.120-126, identify 5-8 core reasons for the outbreak of World War 2.

· Create an acronym (like MANIAC) for these reasons.

· In 8-10 sentences, explain your choices and summarize your rationale for these selections.
