Performance Management Systems

Companies use performance appraisals to evaluate their employees annually. Performance appraisals are useful in measuring the overall performance of employees in a specific year. Companies can determine the employees who fail to meet the expectations of the performance appraisals and correct them. The performance appraisals can serve as a basis for changing or modifying the behavior of employees to increase their productivity.

Some of the common performance issues with employees are mandated issues, single incidences, behavioral patterns, persistent patterns, and disciplinary. The mandated issues include sexual harassment and sharing private information. For example, doctors who share health information of their patients are considered to have violated their privacy and this is a mandated issue. Single incidents occur when employees insult each other and can easily be solved with casual conversations. The single incidences may feel to be corrected immediately and grow into behavioral patterns. Another performance issue is persistent patterns. This occurs when a behavior pattern continues to be exhibited. An employee could correct the behavior but still start behaving in the same old manner after some time.

The responsibility of human resource management is to investigate the situation. Human resource professionals have to train the managers on how to document the performance failings. Proper documentation helps when an employee has to be terminated for a performance issue. They should ensure that employees are corrected when they behave inappropriately. Human resource management should ensure that the issue of underperformance is dealt with as soon as possible. If the issue is not addressed, employees might get used to poor performance and the production of the company will decrease. A disciplined process can be carried out to deal with employee problems. When a progressive discipline process is carried out, it should be documented and applied to any other employee who commits the same offense.
