The Unit 5 readings and presentation focus on learning about conflict styles and tactics. In addition to the textbook reading, you will read a case entitled “He Said, She Said,” which addresses styles and tactics in conflict.

Read Chapter 5: “Styles and Tactics” in Interpersonal Conflict. In this chapter, Hocker and Wilmot discuss conflict styles and tactics. First, they note that it is important to understand whether we tend to have an active or passive tactic toward conflict. They suggest that it is important to understand whether we were likely to avoid or engage in conflict. Once this has been established, the authors suggest that we can explore our conflict styles in greater depth. In most situations, we have a tendency to use one of the conflict styles. However, doing so diminishes our ability to engage in more constructive conflict that requires greater flexibility and adaptation. The authors argue that understanding one’s own tendencies and preferences is an important step in developing new, more flexible styles that will be suited for a variety of conflict situations.

As you read the chapter, begin thinking about which conflict style you use most frequently. When you've finished the reading, take the conflict styles assessment.
