Is Your Video the Next Big Hit?!
Goal: To solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable.
Role: You are a video producer competing in a contest for production of the most outstanding math educational video that will help viewers understand how to solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters. To win, you must have the most creative and well-put together video that will help your viewers learn the concept.
Audience: Students enrolled in Algebra 1 in the United States.
Situation: The purpose of this video is to create an educational tool that teachers can use in the Algebra 1 classroom to help students understand how to solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable. Your first decision will be to decide what type of video you will create. You may remix the lyrics of a popular song to make a music video, spoof a television show, movie or game show, make up your own original song and record it, or do something completely creative as an educational video. Your job is to create an educational video about the Algebra 1 concept of solving equations and inequalities in one variable that could be sold to help students learn. Your video must include the two following types of equations with explanations of how to solve: 1) two-step equation, 2) multi-step equation with variable, distributive property, and combining like terms on both sides of the equal sign. Your video must also include the two following types of inequalities with explanations of how to solve: 1) two –step inequality, 2) multi-step inequality with variable, distributive property, and combining like terms on both sides. Do not forget that the main purpose is to help your viewer learn and understand the concept, but have fun with your ideas and be creative! Your video will be judged based on the following five categories: 1) Overall (Media was effective, informative, and appealing), 2) Audience Appeal from the Beginning (Audience was hooked from the beginning of the media and kept interest throughout), 3) Indication of Thinking and Learning (Media shows creativity, motivation, and critical-thinking to teach. The presenters clearly had an understanding of the topic, and did the necessary research to ensure that their viewers would LEARN), 4) Clarity (Audience can CLEARLY understand the words throughout the ENTIRE media), 5) Participation (EVERY TIME you were allowed to work on the project, you were COMPLETELY focused and on task.) You must do the necessary research to ensure that you understand the concept and are able to teach it through a video presentation in the most creative way that you can think of that will capture the interests of your audience.
Product: You will begin your project with a rough draft script of your video idea that will be submitted for teacher edits. You will then submit your rough draft and a final educational video to be judged for the contest.
Standards: A-REI.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
