Unit 5 DB: Fact vs. Opinion
In this unit, we have looked at the differences between facts and opinions. You will need to use both in your writing, but they serve very different purposes.
Responses:
Review the two statements that your classmates included at the end of their posts. Which do you think is the fact and which is the opinion? How do you know? Then, consider the use of facts and opinions in society today. In your response, state how often you think people use facts and opinions in their day-to-day lives.
SONJA’S POST:
Good evening, fellow Eagles! Hello Professor J!
The biggest difference between fact and opinion is that facts can always be proven by evidence. Opinions are what one believes to be true, but without evidence from credible and reliable sources, they are merely opinions. I'm rather confident that at one point things that we know as facts today were once someones opinion. it sounds logical to me. Opinions are ever changing. Just last week my best friend's favorite color was pink. For the past few years, that was a fact. If one were to get technical, up until just a few days ago, Pink was her favorite color and it was actually a proven fact. Until it changed. Many of us don't realize that facts are subject to change. If a fact has been proven and another scientist or researcher believes different theories could also work, if he or she brings evidence that changes things, then the fact that existed before they proved otherwise is no longer the controlling fact. Hence facts are subject to change. Does this sound possible, Professor Jarvis?
When writing, one must have facts that back up their claim, such as reliable scholarly sources. Scholarly sources are always a safe bet when doing research because scholarly sources are peer reviewed. Meaning the work is scrutinized by other professionals in the field. Opinions in writing should be cited from a credible source and should be followed by facts supporting the claim.
When we watch the news or read an article in the newspaper, we believe what we hear or read is indeed a fact. Sadly enough, this isn't based on facts. I do not watch television, but I was surprised to learn that Fox News is not a reliable source of information. Fake news sites are easier to find than reliable ones unless you know what to look for. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to tell the real from the fake. Especially those that know the world before the technology age. It is rather difficult to convince my mother that just because she can see a post on her Facebook page, doesn't mean it was put there for her alone, if at all. Her response is, "Well why is it on my Facebook if it wasn't sent to me?' People want to believe in honesty, especially when it comes to humanity. They don't want to have to look out for the wolf in lamb's clothing. They just want people to mean what they say and say what they mean. The reason fact and opinion are so hard to distinguish is due to the fact that no one knows how to tell the truth. Truth is slowly becoming a thing of the past, if you ask me.
Statement #1; The U.S. government secretly dosed Americans with LSD in an attempt to develop mind-control technology.
Statement #2; Ketchup is actually made with fruit.
(When I was a little girl, my uncle and grandpa would see me in front of the television and they would ask me why I was watching the "idiot box" . My uncle told me that if I kept watching it, I would eventually start behaving like his kids. I didn't want to turn into an idiot, so I went outside. Now, I just have too much to do to justify sitting in front of the tv for even an hour. I know this is irrelevant to the assignment, so my apologies. I just wanted to touch on why I don't watch tv)
JOSEPH’S POST:
The biggest difference between a fact and an opinion would be, an opinion is something that I believe, think and or feel. A fact is something that can be supported. But an opinion can also be proven with facts. I would use a fact in writing if I am writing a research paper and or something that needs to be correct. I would use an option in my writing if the paper was about how I feel about a certain subject or issue.
I don’t think people get confused about fact or opinion, what I think happens is people get so caught up in what they think, they start to believe and or think that there opinion is fact.

Unit 5 DB: The Puzzle of Motivation
Unit 5 DB: The Puzzle of Motivation
This discussion is based on a TED Talk by Dan Pink. Pink, a former speech writer, career analyst, and author of the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, reveals some remarkable facts about motivation that have been confirmed in many social science experiments but aren’t widely recognized. Pink argues that the way we’re motivating people is all wrong, and he proposes a new model to replace traditional incentives.
In response to your peers, expand on their ideas related to motivation with the goals of extending the discussions already taking place or posing new possibilities or opinions not previously voice. Whether you agree or disagree, explain why with supporting evidence and concepts from the readings or a related experience. Include a reference, link, or citation when appropriate.
TRESA’S POST:
I was surprised by Dan Pink's TED Talk because I would think a person that is getting rewarded would have a wider and more creative thinking and ideas. I thought the person recieving nothing would not want to put any effort into it until I watched Pink's TED Talk. The person that was not recieving any rewards had a more wider and creative thinking and the people recieving the rewards if they win had a more narrower and less creativity. Like his example with the candle the participants recieving no rewards solved the problem faster with the tacks in the box, but with the example with the tacks out of the box the participants that would recieve a reward solved it faster because it did not require as much thinking and creativity. In the video Pink talked about autonomy, purpose, and mastery. If an employee has a good autonomy and have the opportunity for self-improvement and their time and effort have a purpose they are more likely going to do better. They will have better creative ideas and think out of the box instead of having narrower thinking and less creative ideas.
I think if managers give their employees time to have ideas and the opportunity to improve and move up and their work is for a purpose and not just for a financial reward. I think the employees would enjoy their job and want to put more effort into their work and not be bored. If you have a happy employee they are more likely to do better at their job and stay longer at the company. They are more likely to have better ideas on projects which in turn would better the company. It definitely gets me thinking of how I would want to manage employees in the future even though people do work for money their are other reasons they can also work for. Like the employee putting in time after hours of work to finish a project and the boss took the employee out to dinner. I think if you treat your employees good and let them know how well they are doing I think you would have happy employees. Like my work they ask if you have any ideas on how to improve things at work and everyone talks about it. They also give bonuses at the end of the year around christmas to everyone if they go all year and not use their sick time. At a past employer I worked for a group home and they had a competition to which group home had the best decorative house and you did it with the clients. We had fun doing it and got very creative but the winners did not win money they were taken out to dinner and had a good time. The boss did it to let the employees know that he did care about them. That is how I would want to manage my future employees to let them know that their ideas and time matters and make it an enjoyable place to work.

LAKISHA’S POST:
Pink’s talk was indeed surprising but very interesting. One would surely think that an individual would do a task faster when a reward is dangling at the end of the finish line. Although talking from an experience, just knowing I accomplished something in a timely manner due to my capabilities is a priceless reward within itself. Succeeding in something whether it's being a task on your job, being a great parent, being a great spouse, and/or getting good grades in school. The motivation, the inspiration, the reward is just succeeding in life.
I believe that managers can motivate their employees through communication. Let one know to enhance their knowledge by using all resources that are available within the organization. This can lead to greater opportunities and possibly higher positions within the company. Managers can inspire their employees by allowing them to show their creativity and also encouraging them to share their ideas that they believe can offer great value within the organization. Last but definitely not least I feel that managers can motivate their employees just by offering acknowledgement. A simple:
• Smile
• Thank you
• Handshake
• Great job
• Job well done
These simple gestures and words can mean a great deal to an individual. One just likes to know that they’re not invisible. ( The little things definitely does mean a lot.)
In my pursuits toward a meaningful and successful career, I will motivate myself to not give up even when the odds are against me. My inspiration is within myself, the knowing that I can and will accomplish anything and everything that I set my mind out to do. I am capable of being successful, I have the ability of being successful, I have the drive to be successful and with the blessing from GOD I will be successful.
