Should Parents Limit How Much Time Children Spend on Tech Devices?
Parents should limit the time children spend on tech devices.
It may be right for parents to limit the time Children spend on tech devices, but it creates a lot of disadvantages for children if they are away from technology in this rapidly changing world. The Article “Why parents shouldn’t worry about how much screen time kids have right now” by Angela Nelson presents Marina Umaschi Bers, professor and chair at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development, adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department, and head of the Developmental Technologies (Dev Tech) research group at Tufts says, “Why parents should take a deep breath (in through the nose, out through the mouth) and reframe their thinking around screens during this time”. Bers has used metaphors for playgrounds such as the screen with multiple technologies and playpens with a single technology. So Bers has suggested the readers keep children away from technological playpens or spend very less time with them. She has also suggested creating a schedule for use of screens so that children can use technology in more creative ways. Some of the creative uses of screens suggested by Bers were “Learn to code with the free Scratch Jr app created by the Dev Tech research group, Draw or color, Take and edit pictures of yourself, other people, and things in your life, Make collages or albums with those creations, Create videos of yourself or others (with their permission), Take your device outside for scavenger hunts or geocaching, Record sounds you hear around your house or yard, Move—exercise along with a video or learn a new dance, Communicate with others—talk via video chats, create correspondence like e-cards, or interview family members”. So, from all the article evidence we can say that limiting children from screens is not a good idea for child development so every parent should aim to reframe their child’s screen time to more creative and useful secession.
